My new to me 911 cab's power top dash light comes on when I start the car and does not go out. I bought the car 2 weeks ago and this is my first 911 with a power top. After reading previous horror stories posted on this list I'm terrified.
When I picked the car up at BrandyWine Porsche the top was up and I did not bother to try it there. A week later on a nice day I decided to put the top down. Followed all instructions printed in the OM. Top would not budge. Called the dealer and he walked me thru a few things including checking the fuse. After hanging up with him I gave it one more try and the top came down. The next day I decided to put the top up and that went perfectly too, including the latching of the roof. I can not honestly remember if the red dash indicator light went off after the top cycled closed. Well this morning I started the car and the dash indicator light stayed on all the way to my office. Any advice? THANKS! this list rocks! Andrew Conti 1988 911 Cab. CE |

This does not answer your question but I would recommend disconnecting the power top altogether. I have a power top that works just fine, but eventually one of the motors will start to wear and the top cables will pull unevenly. When that happens, boom, the aluminum frame snaps and punches a whole in your top. I operate it manually and have no fears.
Instructions are in the owners manual. |

Andrew -
My 89' cab sometimes has a similar issue with the dash indicator light. Every once in a while the light comes on in either the open or closed position. In my case, seems to be a result of the top just shifting a bit. holding the rocker switch down to snug the top back into position (either all the way open or all the way closed) seems to do the trick. Also, sometimes if the light comes on when the top is closed, I open it a couple of inches then close it tight and the light goes off. Wyatt

Wyatt's spot on. I occasionally do the same thing. I think putting the roof up when the car is parked on an angle (angle left/right) affects this, too.

My 88 top light would come on everyonce and while also. Just hit the botton to make sure securely closed or open all the way and the light will go out. No worries.

...and never operate the roof when the car is on anything but a flat surface....

... and check all the working parts and linkages once in a while. When I dropped my car off at the wrench a while back, there was a 964 cab that experienced a very bad day. It seems the frame and motors ripped from the body mounts and it looked like someone was body slammed onto the top.
