Mirror becoming Unglued...how does it stick?

Driving around today, the driver side mirror started "flapping".... in other words, the lower side of it had come loose and the top was just holding it in place.

I reached out the window and pressed on the bottom of the mirror and this seemed to make it "stick"...but a little while later it came loose again.

How is the mirror fastened to whatever is behind it? Should I just stick some strong epoxy behind there to glue it into place?

Thanks

It's probably a special kind of glue because the mirror is heated. Mine did the same thing, but I had no warning. In a matter of seconds I saw it fall out and turn into a thousand pieces as I drove down the road.

A new part from the dealer cost me $75, but it's not just the glass, it's the heating element too.

You can try glue, some people told me that they had glass cut to fit, so they must have just glued it back in place.

To get the mirror assembly out, adjust the mirror all of the way up and in (towards the car and pointing towards the sky). That way you can see behind the mirror. below the mirror in the housing is a small hole. You'll need to stick a screw driver up through that hole to turn a nub about 1/4 -- 1/2", then the mirror will come out. Getting mine out the first time took 20-30 minutes because it's hard to see what you're doing, especially if you've never done it before. getting it back together is easy.

Yikes, yep, I'd try some really good glue or epoxy at least for the trip, and try to avoid turning on the rear defogger/defroster. That's what turns the heat to the mirrors on. I can't imagine that would help the glue.

Good luck, I hope the trip is a fun one.

I don't know if my '82 SC would be different, but the (heated) mirrors on mine are stuck on w/ metal plugs that go into holes w/ plastic grommets. You can simply pull the mirror straight off, (carefully), unplug the 2 wires and it's out. Mine was flapping in the breeze for ~2 years before I finally replaced it, so I doubt that yours will fall off. I wouldn't glue it, you'll never get it off after that, just put a rubber band around the whole assembly if you are worried about it. (Until you can fix it properly).

Well, I don't know when they changed, but my '88 is definitely not pull off. I think Sonic's '86 will be similar to mine, but I'm not sure.

I epoxied mine and it has been great for a year now. You can put a couple of rubber bands around it so it won't fall out until you get a solution. Crude but it works.
