Just installed Seine Systems Gate Shift!

Hi All,

Just installed a Seine Systems Gate Shift kit. I wish I'd done it sooner?!! It's an excellent upgrade that I'd recommend everyone with a 915 gearbox should do!

Took about 2 hours to install, replaced the shift bushings as well. I now have hardly any slop in the shifter and will never again nick reverse when changing down from 5th!

How much did the setup cost? Did you buy it direct from Seine?

Put one in today too...and blueprinted the shifter as much as I could per Sherwood's directions on his website (Seine Systems). Definite improvement and money well spent...

I'm considering the Wevo... around 500.00 Shrup just did one and the feedback is good.

Did you weld the bracket thing or what? The weld is what is holding me back on that system... I don't have a welder.

You can drive it with the clamp holding the tab on the shaft as a temporary thing, but it should be welded. UTKarmannGhia has had his in for a few weeks without welding. One of these days he will bring it by and I'll weld it on for him.

If you decide to do it and want it welded, just come up to Aurora and I'll weld it on for you too. It's a qucik, easy thing to weld.

It definitely needs welding, my local shop did mine for £20.

I also installed one together with a factory short shift kit. Also replaced all other parts with wear and tear. Feels kinda stiff, but I only have the old to compare with.

I put in the Siene with a factory short shift as well. I also put in a Stomski Racing shift coupler. Just a few of those "while I'm in there" upgrades while doing my rebuild. Can't wait to shift this thing!

The stifness is coming from the interference between the shift lever and the metal bell shaped shift fork that it fits into. My factory short shift kit did that as well until I did this... (go to this link)

This is the best money I have spent so far. I wouldn't see a need to spend $500 or more for another shifter when this one is setup just like it should have come from the factory; it shifts great now with the shift pattern well defined. The problem, as it has been stated before, is the transmission itself. Jack Olsen mentioned that he has tried Hayden's Wevo product which is installed in the transmission itself to futher define the gates, and that is what I would save for next.

However, since I don't track the car, and auto-x is only 2nd or 3rd gear, this is not money well spent for me.

Just as an FYI - if you ever let anyone else drive your car, clearly explain to them how the shifter now works. I had this idiot smog guy drive my car, and he broke the spot welds on the shifter as he didn't know how to get the car in gear. There is now a heavy duty weld all around now.

Yeah it does make you wonder why Porsche didn't design it like that from the start!

because back in those days, cars in general had crappier gearboxes and actually knew how to shift without these sort of gizmo's...if you go back another further in time, cars didn't even have synchro's..double clutching actually was essential for those cars..for it's time , the 915 box was probably very smooth and effecient without a gate shifter.


let's face it, new gearboxes are so silky smooth, that most people have gotten used to shifting a stick with 2 fingers...
if they are used to shift in the first place(like many folks in the US)

one of the reasons i wanted an early 911, and not a newer model, or a 944 for that matter...was that i wanted a real drivers car without power steering,braking,clutching,abs , tcs, ...
eg a car without fancy technology made for soccer mum's so they too can operate the vehicle...

i don't think the engineers and designers back in the seventies said:

check the downshift poll , did you vote? i'm trying to figure out if any of us Eurotrash also makes such a big deal of the downshifting procedure, aka double clutching blipping stuff like that...

need more european folks to vote , to get a more acurate picture

So you used the yellow spring?

Are the most noticable changes in couple adjustments or in the shifter it's self?

I am in the process of changing the shifter, used "J-B Weld" two tube mix epoxy as a temporary hold plus the ring clamp.

I don't have much background on this stuff, but a Karmen Gina owner I know fixed his carb with it.

The coupler works great in all gears except second (as tested before shift housing removal but after installing a fresh coupler). If I slide the coupler/shift rod connection foreward 1/4" will second get better at the expense of first gear ease?
