G50 01 Vs G50 03
I got gearing charts from a friend that show that the G50 03 has slightly taller 3rd, 4th, and 5th gears than a G50 01. Does anyone know what year cars each of these come from?

Are you planning on moving to a G50 in your turbo?? You are just a mad man!
I can't be sure until I get home, but I think the G50.01 was used in US model '87-'89 cars. I think the Euro tranny for the same years was the G50.00 and used a higher 4th and 5th. I'm just guessing that the 03 is maybe a 964 tranny.

I was talking to a friend of mine that owns a shop that works on high end cars. He said I'd get more of a performance boost by changing to a G50 than I would with the EFI conversion so that's what I'm looking at. The G50/50 fifth gear is close to the 930 4th gear which is very tall so I'm considering using a regular G50.
Anyone have experience with Patrick Motorsports conversion parts?

I love the G50 with the 930 motor but I also hear great things about EFI. So tough choice. I am doing the EFI swap right now. Dean

After doing more surfing and bringing up some old posts that I was even involved with, I realized that I decided not to do the G50 conversion a long time ago.
My reasons: If I install a 8:39 R&P, my 4 gears will be about the same as the first 4 gears on a G50/50. Since I don't do much long distance driving, I'm not too worried about not having a cruising gear. Any finally a R&P is about $1,500 while the G50/50 and conversion parts are about $9,000. I think I'll put the extra money in EFI and my pocket and run a little higher RPM on the highway.

Doesn't want/need a 3.6L

Hi,
To answer your original question, here are the gearbox codes: G50/01 Carrera 3.2L G50/03 Carrera 2 G50/10-4 Carrera 2 Cup (steel synchros) G50/04 Carrera 2 G50/10-2 Euro RS (steel synchros) G50/52 Turbo While the G50/03 & G50/04's are both for Carrera 2's, I don't know what the differences are other than gear ratios. If you want to PM me I can give you the whole list of ratios for each transaxle type as well as a couple of "shorter" factory final drive ratios that are considered "sport". Hope the above info is of some use to you. Regards, Ralph P.S. - Optimizing the gear ratios for your engine's powerband and rpm peak is a great way to increase acceleration and the fun factor. Gearboxes are considered "black magic" with many people and typically are the last things that people modify, usually because they start breaking parts due to horsepower upgrades! |
