996 to 930 brake swap

I have a 1977 930. I was given a virtually new set of 996 calipers and rotors from a racing friend (he upgraded the brakes on his street car) and I would like to use these calipers and rotors to upgrade the brakes on the 930. I note that the rotors are 12", much larger than the original rotors and that the front swap looks much more difficult than the rear.

What do I need to do to make this work? Does anyone make a kit? Can I keep my 16" Fuchs wheels?

Steve

I'm pretty sure you can't get 16" wheels on over 996 calipers/rotors.

However, I have been looking to upgrade the brakes on my Boxster to 996 calipers. If you're interested, perhaps we could swap. I know that the calipers I have will fit with 16" wheels, as the Boxster uses 16" wheels. I know I've seen a few people on the Board that have upgraded to Boxster brakes, so I know it can be done.

Let me know.

I measured the rotors wrong, they are 13" and the setup is from his 996 twin turbo. The stuff is almost new so I am inclined to use versus swap. I am hotrodding the engine in the 930 so I want enough brake to stop it. Thanks for the offer.

You might try VCI or Rennsport Systems to see if they sell the adapters. You will probably have to switch to at least a 17" wheel. You may be able to space a 16" wheel out far enough to clear the caliper.

If calipers have same mounting points as 993TT calipers then it's mainly matter of buying apropriate adapters (at least on front axle).

Here are ours:

I was just looking at new brake kits sold here at pelican, and for the 911 Turbo big brake kit setup the rotors are 12.7" and it is noted that 17" or bigger wheels are needed for the kit. So im not quite sure if the 12.0" rotors would fit or not with your 16" wheels.

The clearence problem comes from the caliper size not the rotor. My 930 calipers w/12" rotors clear my 15" wheels. I have C2 turbo calipers w/12.7 rotors on our race car. I had to space the 16" wheel out (1" spacer) to clear the caliper. I'm assuming the TT calipers are bigger than the C2's. The turbos used a 1" spacer in the front and 2" spacer in the rear, so spacing it out isn't a problem.

The calipers can be fitted fairly easily enough, they are actually smaller in physical size than 993tt

Front 996tt on left, 993tt on right

The 996tt uses rotors that are even bigger than 993tt and they do not fit correctly w/o other major changes. The kits I have seen change rear spindles, front hubs, as well as the usual caliper adaptors.
