Huge 911 Rollover

Hi All

Quite a few guys from the Australian 911 scene (and here ) attended the 2012 Phillip Island Historics in Victoria, Australia earlier this month. It's a brilliant weekend and if ever you're over this side of the pond it's worth attending.

There was a monumental roll-over incident on the fastest left hander in the southern hemisphere after a car further in front blew an oil line...

Driver, Brian Taylor made a full recovery with just bruises. A testament to a good cage, HANS and harnesses!

The full (and frightening sequence) is here Photo Gallery: Terrifying Porsche 911 crash sequencePhoto Gallery: Terrifying Porsche 911 crash sequence

Video is worth watching also AUSmotive.com ยป That’ll buff right out

It took a while for the flag guy to stop waving the green flag. I was actually wondering if the Aussies use a green flag when there was a wreck.

Green Flag was past the wreck = resume, yellow would have been further back on other side of wreck. Red probably came out once the call was made to halt the race.

Actually they do, like the rest of the world. The post before the wreck waves yellow, the one behind waves green.

WOW.

One thing this shows is how inadequate our usual 3’ ‘K’ barriers are.
That car could have cleared a 5’ barrier and ended up in spectators’ laps.

Good there was plenty of trackside space.

Shows the value of good safety equipment.

Best,
Grady

3.1.2 Flag signals to be used at flag posts:
(a) Red flag: This should be shown waved only on instruction from the Clerk of the Course when it becomes necessary to stop a practice session or the race by other than the chequered flag. All drivers are required to slow down immediately and proceed to the pit lane (or the place foreseen by the regulations of the Event), and must be prepared to stop if necessary. Overtaking is not permitted.

Yellow flag: This is a signal of danger and should be shown to drivers in two ways with the following
meanings:

- Single waved: Reduce your speed, do not overtake and be prepared to change direction. There is a hazard
beside or partly on the track.
This isn't NASCAR, we don't stop on track unless instructed to do so in pre race briefing or instructed to do so by Clerk of Course. The Yellow was waved in conjunction with the Red as it signifies that there was a hazard beside or partly on the track for those cars approaching the accident while returning to the pits under the Red.

Cheers Al

In the first video I thought for a moment that he had been thrown clear...At least that is the way it seemed when the red flag came out and I saw him run back and climb in his car....

What make of car is #82 in the roll-over sequence? Ginetta? I suppose I could Google that.

Red flag in PCA Racing means to safely come to a stop in view of the next flag station. Our Black Flag (All stations) means for everyone to slow down and pit in. Red is bad, Black just means there are 944's out there..

Classic example of "being at the wrong place at the wrong time" - car in front got out-of-shape and red car went off the line ot avoid hitting.

Except this was in Australia so our CAMS rules as posted apply :-)

I think the OP said the white Corvette (or someone in front of him) blew an oil line?

Understand, just pointing out where the confusion may be as we aren't Nascar either...
