Do not care for the 'bulge beneath the bumper' look of the lower 'glass valence, so I am going with a front cooler that
Setrab custom makes for Patrick Motorsports - which attaches directly UNDER the front bumper. Now I have to find a method to protect the lines. According to James Patrick, this ought to cool the heck out of the Varioram 3.6 when used in conjunction with the fender mounted Carrera cooler I already have with the 2 accompanying fans. Anyone out there in Pelican-land do this? Craig RS ...I see Variorams..... Last edited by Craig 930 RS; 05-07-2004 at 11:41 AM.. |

Have you thought about two fender coolers? Ryan's 3.6-swap site has lots of good info on it.

I did. But 2 fender coolers are not as efficient as a fender and a front. Haven't ruled it out yet, however.
Link to his site? Craig RS |

I went with a fluidyne cooler(transmission cooler for a NASCAR). It's made by some circle track guys. I know this would horrify some members here but it was very reasonable(260.00, No Porsche tax) and is excellent quality. I have had it on my Club Racing car and haven't seen the temps get higher than 210 on a 95deg day. It's a bit smaller than the usual coolers sold too. All I had to get to hook it up were the -AN to metric adapters.

Mounting under the front bumper? Pictures? How is it protected?
My vote is for the one in each corner, and my car has one in the nose and one in the corner. Tinker |

Whoops, It's in an RSR front bumper with Oil cooler opening. Working too many hours...

2o years ago now, I cut open an SC valance right behind the License plate, formed a duct for the brakes, cooler at the track, bolt the plate on for street use. Which sertrab are you using? There is not much room behind the valance, hence, the rs style valance use. Or major notching on the front bulkhead. Post pictures of the cooler. I have used the big sertrab in front, and its impossible to fit a rs or rsr spoiler with out either bulging out the side of the valance(tennis ball size wart) or notching the bulkhead( metal surgery)

The cooler is IN!
A novel installation - guaranteed to work - a friend has done this install on four 964/993 engines in earlier cars (SCs) and temps never exceed 220 even in track temps of 100 degrees. A great way to install a front mounted cooler without big valences! Section the lower bumper and a bit of the top of the valence - a CLEAN installation. I am very satisfied with the results. Between this cooler (Setrab, from Patrick Motorsports) and the fender Carrera cooler, the 3.6 Varioram ought to be pretty damn happy....... Craig @RS |

Thanks for the update craig! How about a picture to get any idea of the whole front end look with the cooler? Thanks.

Umm, Am I missing something. You have no airflow over the cooler?!

You aren't missing a thing. The guy who helped on this has done 12 of these, 5 of them on 3.6 conversions.
This front cooler, on an SC car with 3.6 - & with with the fender mounted cooler I already have - resulted in temps no higher than 220 on a 105 degree day at Thunderhill. My car is so low and has the front lip spolier - not much air goes UNDER the car, forcing the air through the cooler (which stands almost 2 inches away from the inner body btw) That ought to do the trick. Plus, it is a 'proven upgrade' ;-) Craig @RS

220 is getting up there. Remember every degree above 200 is a couple Hp+/-. My car runs 205 tops in a 1.5 hr enduro(5.5K rpm average) and 90deg. weather. Personally I would prefer a good airflow ala factory stuff(993 RSR etc.) Just something to consider if you are going to race though.
Cheers, James

The average engine temp for the Thunderhill day was about 210 - quite low.
