First 100 Miles on a new 3.4
 

Finally had a chance to turn the key on my new engine this afternoon. (SC 3.0 is now a CIS 3.4)

Sounds like a sewing machine. Although it is a bit loud...louder than before. Hard to figure out exactly what is different when you are stresed about the first 100 miles and breakin.

But here are my thoughts for the moment. LOTS more torque. It used to kick in around 4K on the dyno. You can now see the cam come on and the tach jump and the car start pulling hard at between 3100 / 32OO until you let up. So much torgue I would have sworn I was in 3rd once but was actually 5th. Pulls like the proverbial freight train...even this new and @ 100 miles.

Engine came in $1400 under budget, surprizingly and came out a pretty color too :) More later.

I get all moist just thinking about it Dane, can't wait to hear it this weekend!!! BTW after JW properly adjusted my valves my motor sounds like a Singer too, he said they were way out.

That motor sounds more like a freakin turbine than a singer. Looks awesome too. Great job Dane!!

As you can see we back dated the heater and added a little paint in there. Best part is actually being able to see the left bank of plugs and the powder coated sump cover ;)

Yeah, going up the mountain on I90 doing 100 mph, pulling like your in 3rd...I would say there is some torque there. Seemed kinda sad getting back into my car Dane. Very impressive!

Congratulations. Nothing better than not just getting a project done, but bringing it in under budget.

I like it! Very nice. Hmmm...I bet my little ring and pinion wouldn't last past the break in period with all that torque. What do you guys think? Would a 7.31 r/p last with a 3.4 like Dane's?

From all the discussion I've seen here there should be no reason a 7:31 915 wouldn't last, if it had all the proper upgrades.

Great job, the engine looks awesome, I can only imagine how it feels. I do know torque though and you’ve got to love it!

Thanks so much guys! The members here made this one possible. Funny enough it isn't a 3.6 but then again it isn't a 3.0 either :) Going to take some getting use to as it is pretty easy to spin the tires now on dry pavement in first gear.

After 5 months of being without my wheels...just wanted you guys to see what I would be doing in the morning as the sun comes up!

Back to the original Fuchs now. Once I hit 1500 miles I'll switch to Mobil 1 and then dyno the car on the same machine I used last year. That should be an interesting comparison as I was 182 rwhp and 162 on Torgue or 215hp at the crank with my 3.0. Plan is to dyno the 3.4 as a single plug and then twin plug late summer and see what the difference is.

What did your compression ratio end up at? Are you running race gas now with the single plug setup? What ignition are you going with when you twin plug?

Awesome, Dane. Can't wait to see it Sunday. I love the engien appearance. I like sleepers, but I also like colorful engines.

I would guess that the 20/21 cams make good use of intake air velocity. the reason I say this is because my engine (still a 3-liter) certainly responded well to the cams with its narrower intake runners (causing air to achieve higher velocity), and now you're getting the same FAT SMOOTH power band with the wider runners, perhaps due to the increased volume, and consequent increased velocity. It's a theory we can discuss Sunday.

There will be at least a couple of winter projects unveiled then. Pretty exciting. Congrats, Dane. Enjoy.

Custom offset, 16" two piece Fuchs, anodized, 8" and 9.5" with 225x45x16 and 245x45x16 SO3s.


Another topic altogether ;) Compression ended up 9.83:1 with a 1mm shim at the cylinder base. So no need for race gas, thank goodness. Motor nearly made Washington smog with zero miles. So while I don't have that issue any longer because of the date of the car I spec'ed the engine so it would smog if ever required.

I will be be doing the Electromotive HPX twin plug set up. Really curious to see what the dyno says with and without race gas in both versions and the result of the twin plugs.

Jim, I took some care to get as much as possible from the CIS. New injectors, lwt Pauter rods, bumping the compression as high as I dared for a street car, the improved CIS/motronic pistons, bored throttle body, and the case/cylinder work. We'll need another group dyno day soon!

You and Paul did an awesome job on his car. Really looking forward to seeing it in the morning.
