Spark Plugs
Anyone else besides me realize how insanely hard it is to find spark plugs for their 911's? I know our host carries them, but when it's the only thing you need, sparks plugs and 5 bucks for shipping seems a little odd. I went around to all different part stores today looking for plugs for my sc, and it was next to impossible. AutoZone, Checker, Pepboys, and Napa 1 and 2. I got lucky with Napa store #2 who had 8 plugs in the heat range i needed, in copper, made by ngk (by this time i wasn't about to be picky by requesting bosch coppers).

I've actually had pretty good luck with advance auto parts, as long as I give them like 2 days notice they can get them for me... granted they kind of bend over backwards to help since our shop buys like 48 qts of mobile 1 from them a week.

A second vote for Advance Auto. I like NGK plugs and they always have what I'm looking for...

I use NGK and can find them at most auto parts stores.

You know, for the massive savings in time, $4 for shipping doesn't seem so bad, really. I mean, it's 2 minutes in front of the computer, or 2 hours dancing around to the local shops trying to find the darn things, plus gas to drive to each of them, plus traffic hassle ... I'll blow a couple bucks on shipping, myself.

I've never had any problems picking up a set of Autolites at my local Kragan for my 3.2. I run 64's which also happens to be the heat range for the SC.
Not only are they the best plugs I have ever used but they also happen to be the cheapest @ $0.99 each. Go figure... Joe |

Having worked in a Porsche shop for just over a year now, I have to say that using a plug other than Bosch in a 911 is really not the best way to go. As for NGK I have to give you guys some credit becuase I agree they make a great spark plug and of all the brands out there, they probably are the best alternative, but auto-lite... we will tell customers not to come back if they use autolite and aren't willing to switch to Bosch. They are $.99 for a reason.
That's just my two cents, but

Advance auto near me sells Autolite Platinums for $2.99 (I think) Any opposition to those?

Personally I'll stick with OEM as the new spark plug technology since the birth of my car seems to be relatively questionable.

Well there are no avanced autoparts here in Cruces. And there are no porsche shops, mechanics, or even someone who knows how to spell porsche here in Cruces. I think it's easier to locate the NGK's because that's the same heat range plug, the bp7es, that get's used in most 125cc dirt bikes motors (bet you didn't know that one). And NGK's, when i used to ride, were popular with 2cycle dirt bikes since they didn't seem to foul as often as other brands. I remember using a champion plug in my race bike one time, it took half a day to foul it. NGK's used to last me 1 full weekend of trail racing, sometimes even two.

Platinum plugs do not burn as well in our cars as do solid core copper. I am not sure why Bosch over NGK. As I understood it, both were the preferred. I had heard, don't know if true or not, to not use Champion in Aluminum blocks. But my Toyota did run better, read improved fuel economy, when I switched from Champion to NGK.
I always thought Autolite were horrble plugs. The dealership put some into our Chevy 350 when my wife took it in for some factory service. The truck ran like heck and no-one could figure out why. I took out the autolites and replaced with NGK at the same gap. Night and day.

I recently called Napa.....they had two plugs that I needed. Pep Boys had one. Auto Zone had two. I got tired of making numerous trips. Now I go to the multi-brand motorcyle dealer near my house.....they'll always numerous plugs for a number of different air-cooled applications. As a bonus, new NGKs last week ended up costing 10 bucks for six plugs.

Typical example of spending 3 hours of your time to save $5. And then come to the free forum to whine about it.
![]() Seriously, if you need plugs, you probably need a rotor and a cap too, and likely an oil change and an air and fuel filter. Before you know it, you could have ordered the tuneup kit from PP, ended up with top quality parts and saved a bunch of $ and hassle. ![]() George |

PM me with whatever you got unfixed. I still don't know of anyone that likes porsches around here.
EDIT: And the car already had new rotor, cap, and stuff. Wires i did buy from pelican (although i'm still kicking myself for not making my own). And the plugs i forgot to throw in with the order.

Is the NGK bp7es also the same plug reccomended for the euro 81-83 SC (930/10) motor? I have found these plugs locally, but wasn't sure if the euro motor with higher compression requires different plugs.

I just received my first order from PP for maintenance parts. I found the spark plugs at Checker auto parts. Had called the usual parts house and they could get them for me but would take a couple of days. I was going to Checker to buy adhesive remover for another project and asked if they had Bosch coppers, he looked at the computer went to the back and came out with a box that had 2 dozen wr7dc's asked how much. $.99
