Barry Bennet's car: Update

(I originally posted this last night as an add on to another post.)

I've got to go to bed but I wanted to post a quick update on Barrys car project. Janus (JanusCole) and I tore the transmission down far enough to see what it needed for parts. If you are wondering what this is all about, see Death of Fellow Pelican BBS Member...

The drainplug had the normal fuzz. No teeth or spare change. This is good.

Janus is strutting his mechanical stuff with this lovely ensemble. The orange punch from Germany and lavender rubber gloves are the look that says Spring! :D
But seriously, I bet this transmission has never been apart. Look at the blue paint on the large nut.

Another use for the fork alignment tool slash cup holder. It works great for keeping the shafts and forks together while removing them as a unit. I used to tie them up with a shop rag but this works much better. My buddy Mark Hald ("Hald") came up with this idea. (If you don't have any smart friends, I suggest you get some. They are great.)

More evidence that this transmission hasn't been rebuilt, at least not in long time. You're looking at 1st and 2nd gear. 1st is on the right, 2nd on the left. Notice the dog teeth on 1st are symetric i.e. shaped like little houses. Porsche switched to stronger asymetric teeth for 1st at some point ('77?) and the replacement 1st dog teeth and slider you can get now are asymetric. I don't know if the symetric 1st gear dog teeth are even available anymore.

If you wondering what is odd about this picture, I removed the slider so you can see the bald spots on the synchros and the shape of the dog teeth.

I left my notes out in the garage but the transmission looked good. I think 1st and 2nd dogs, slider and synchros were needed and a sychro on 3rd or 4th. Don't quote me on that.
The bearing were nice and tight in the case.
Off to bed now.

Nice work Chris and Janus. Keep it up...

Chris,

Never mind the lavender gloves, hopefully you guys are wearing face masks! There is NOTHING worse than the smell of gear oil in my opinion. Trust me, I know;)

I don't think it's been apart either. The blue paint on the nut is a good clue, unless the previous gearbox rebuilder was very anal (er, meticulous)!

I knew a guy who had his 930 completely redone and had the mechanic go back and put yellow or red paint on every single bolt, screw, nut, etc. to make it look as original as possible. His 930 just happened to be the gray slantnose that won the Car & Driver or Road & Track (can't remember which) 0-100-0 competition a few years ago.

Good luck with the project!

Ralph

Thanks very much for the update...it's a great feeling to know that his project is going forward. :)

Looks great! I assume all the parts came through then fine? I didn't hear anything since I passed off the request...

Hi Wayne,
I only know about the transmission parts (which I haven't ordered yet). I saw Ed today and I don't think he is waiting on any parts. I know Uncle Zak donated some motor parts this winter.

Barry Bennett's engine

Wayne and others,

I've been posting on the other thread.
Engine is ready to have the heads installed and all is well. Damon, Series 900, will be ready to start the paint process about the end of May. Jane wants it "arrest me red".

Our PCA region, North Country, just gave Jane a membership.

Since we're starting to talk paint, here are some pics of body panels as we found them.

Thanks for the Update Chris, and thanks to Janus, Ed and all the other Pelican's who have/are helping on this project:) I wish I could be of hands-on help:( Glad to hear Jane want's it "arrest-me-red"/Guards Red, an appropriate color for a 911 and Fireman's car.

You guys are amazing - words can't really describe what you're doing for Jane and her kids. :)

Thanks for keeping us updated.

Transmission update

Hi everyone,
I did a survey of Barry's transmission the other day. I didn't take all the gears off the shaft so the examination could have been more thorough. I intend to hold a transmission rebuild session on June 5th and I wanted to leave some work for that.
Here are the results:

1st: Old style dogs, worn synchro
1/2 slider: Old style, symetric 1st teeth
2nd: Dogs seem OK, worn synchro
3rd: Dogs OKish, synchro looks flippable
3/4 slider: not checked
4th: Dogs rounded but is synchro great
5th: Dogs and synchros great
Bearings tight in case.
Guide tube smooth, not grooved, like new.

The Plan:

I'll replace 1st and 2nd dogs, synchros, slider and brake bands and stone the burrs on the 3/4 slider.

If it was my money I'd probably replace more but it isn't so I'm trying to economize.
-Chris

BTW: If you are one of the few who haven't been to a Messin' with 911's 915 rebuild session, email me. I'll put you on the list and save some icky gasket scraping work for you. :D

Hi Chris, I just found out that I have to be in NH the 6th for a niece's graduation. I'll try to come up the 5th and lend a hand and then meet the family up there the next day.

I've got a guest bed if you need it.

Looking at Dean's pictures of the body, I am reminded that it was about 0 degrees in her garage or maybe colder. I think the cold helped preserve Barry's Targa.

timlooney 06-02-2004 04:27 AM

Ahh, yes the cold weather was very "refreshing".

I don't know if I got used to the smell or if I've been working on less stinky transmissions but I don't mind it at all now. I do remember it being a lot stinkier the first time years ago.
Trivia: I asked once why even the synthetic gear oil smells like old swamps. It turns out that it isn't the oil itself you're smelling, its some sort of sulfur high pressure additive.
