Twin plugging distributer wires.

I am getting my 964 distributer and would like to ask what any others did for a wiring harness to fit an earlier engine. Just use the C2 harness or custom make one? Any problems with fitment on an earlier engine in wiring length or routing? Thanks.

I know of no aftermarket wire kits for these cars(964/993) you may have to buy factory(ouch) and modify the tin. There are several slightly different configurations.

the regular wires on the 964 dist. will work on an earlier engine (at least on a 3.2l) -- is that what you are asking?

Hi,

I am doing the same thing for my 3.5L twin-plug conversion. I am at work right now, but can PM you some information later on tonight or tomorrow.

I used to work at Andial and have a list of parts required for a clean installation. I don't have a template yet to cut the engine tin but Andial is going to give me theirs when I get to that point.

Ralph

I used stock 964 wires. The 1-2-3 wires route through the rear tin section where the heater ducting used to go, with a home-made aluminum block off plate around it. The 4-5-6 side goes through the tin roughly between cylinders 4 and 5.

I made a template out of cardboard, then cut a football shaped hole with a drill press and a dremel.

Thanks, My engine is done and the twin distributer is coming tomorrow. I figured the harness would fit but thought I might throw out any alternatives before ordering. A template would be great if you have one. It would be easy now that the engine is still out.

Sorry Randy, I guess that I didn't realize that more people may be interested.

Since you are using the Motronic, I am assuming that you are using the Andial Signal Splitter? If not, you have to find something to tell the distributor what to do. The Andial setup is sweet and works well. It mounts under the driver seat close to the DME unit and the panel includes instructions on how to wire it up between the panel, DME unit and two ignition coils. You will have to make your own loom though. If you need the instructions, I can fax those to you because I don't have a scanner and would probably be too stupid to use it anyway.

Anyway, here are the parts that you can use for a very clean looking Motronic conversion. Note that the SC/930's will use completely different parts. I have a parts list for those as well.

(1) 964/993 Distributor 930 602 015 01 or 0 237 503 004
(1) Andial Signal Splitter AND 903 950 02
(1) 2nd Ignition Coil 00 055 (same as original unit)
(6) Lower Plug Connectors 911 602 315 00 (check and replace uppers if necessary)
(6) Lower Plug Hold Down Clips 901 609 132 01 (okay, not absolutely necessary but they look trick. Get 'em!)
(8) Elbows 944 609 133 00
(16) Connectors 911 609 310 00
(3) Wiring Loom 911 609 591 00
25' of spark plug wire

Like Randy said, you can use the wires from the 964 if necessary but they probably wouldn't aesthetically match the top wires. If your budget allows, probably better to get at least 6 new plug connectors and buy enough spark plug wire to make 12 individual wires. If you wanted to have a different color wire that would also be the time to do it. Remember also to fabricate a nice looking bracket for the 2nd coil.

I wish that I had some pictures to show you what a completed install looks like, but trust me that it looks real nice and factory looking. Typical Andial. You can usually tell an Andial built motor by the attention to detail inside the engine compartment. I hope mine turns out as well aesthetically.

Sorry, but I don't have the template yet to cut the tin as I am still in the parts "gathering" stage and won't drop the motor and start rebuilding for another month or so. That part really shouldn't be that difficult anyway. I probably won't be up at Andial again for a few weeks. I think (but not 100% sure) what they are doing is just emulating the 964 tin anyway so if you have access to a 964 motor maybe you can take a few measurements?

I hope this is info that will do you some good??? This is from my notes from over 10 years ago when we were doing many, many 3.4L and 3.5L twin-plug conversions. As far as I know, they are still building them the same way.

Ralph
