Help!!!
I am trying to install my four spoke wheel to my '85 Carrera and do not want to damage the horn pad. How does it come off?

pulls straight toward the driver..really...there are sprung tabs that hold the pad on.

John...IF it works like the horn on my 1972...and it's a big IF...unhook batteries to save your ears. Push straight down on the pad and twist to the left....This shouldn't damage your pad to try. No risk, might work...

Its scary, but wiggle a little and pull back. I sheet you not, that's how they are attched...unless you have a different kind of 911 Carrera.

Sometimes they are really on there. I usually grab both ends, as close to the center as possible, and pull back semi-sharply while inducing a little forward-tilting leverage at the same time. In other words: Prying it up a little while pulling back so the bottom half pops off first. Good luck!

Disconnect the battery...then pull the horn pad straight off...it is on tight. Then you need a deep socket 27MM. Once the wheel is on and the wires connected, DO NOT put the horn pad back on yet. First, re-connect the battery...if the horn sounds your wires are backwards. If the horn does not sound then the wires are correct. Disconnect the battery and then install your horn pad by pressing it on until the springs seat over the posts. Then re-connect your battery. Drive. Get ticket. Grovel to the wife.

Be careful not to break that tab for the turnsignal cancel.
I was kidding about the "different 911 Carrera" thing..you have the same wheel and horn pad as everyone else who's got fat pig Carrera... It will pop off...secure the wheel so you don't break the tab, and give it a go just like the psots above suggest. |

Oh, and Sam, I already have a 27mm deep socket in my arsenal of tools! Did you need a 6pt or 12pt?

I took it out and drove it. I love it!!! It is much easier to control with the stock wheel. And, yes, you can now see all the gauges clearly.

nice wheel..
On long drives that wheel makes easier to hold on to. I rest my arm on a leg and it's an easy reach to the spoke for good wheel control.

Isn't it amazing that an "aftermarket" steering wheel looks more "Porsche" than the factory wheel? Interior looks great!

Actually, Scott, that is a genuine Porsche wheel. That, in fact, is the actual factory wheel that came on the car when it was new.
Thanks for all the help and compliments my fellow pelicanheads. Sorry I have not posted my official "new owner" pictures. I have been busy with finals at school and preparing to sell my home and move. They are coming soon!

Sorry John, I had the wheels reversed. I actually prefer the aftermarket wheel over the factory wheel. That being said, I still say your interior looks great either way.

Yes, I know a lot of Porsche owners like the aftermarket wheels, especially the 930S wheel. Who knows, maybe I will change my mind down the road. For now, it's factory all the way! I don't know if you noticed, but I still need to change the shifter knob back to the factory version.
