Question Fan Housing Strap removal on 87 Carrera

Is it possible to remove the fan housing strap WITHOUT first removing the fan housing?

I recently noticed that the square nut welded into one end of the strap is pulling through and I want to replace it before it breaks. I can't figure out why this happened, as I did use a torque wrench when tightening the bolt. Bad weld perhaps?

THanks!

I had a fan strap that the square nut popped off of it. Just some tiny tack welds holding it on there. Only reason I can think the nut would pull thru is overtightening. It's easy to do, and I think the torque spec of 30 lb-ft (I believe that's the correct #) might be a misprint. I say this because I also tightened my strap bolt with a torque wrench and found that it was feeling MUCH too tight as I waited for the wrench to click. Now I just snug mine down good and don't worry about it.

Yes, you can get the strap out without removing the fan housing. You have to bend the strap a bit to get it out. Might have to remove the distributor cap or the whole distributor to get it out. Can't remember for sure. No big deal either way.

The wrench, which was just calibrated and set to 18 ft lbs, didn't even click before the nut started to pull through the strap! I'll snug the new one down just tight enough, without the wrench this time.

Thanks!

The housing does not need to come out, but the dizzy and the AC may have to come out.

Ya have to snug it down pretty good so the houseing does't move on you later. Ask me how I know. A little loctite on the bolt won't hurt either.

Distributor has to come out, use some spray lube and pull real hard from one end, using a lot of wiggling. It will come out but you won't think so. When I put the newly replated strap in I covered it with plastic wrap, lubed it up real well and did the same in reverse.

PS make sure that you turn the engine to TDC, and mark the distributor rotor to housing orientation otherwise it's gonna be fun putting the dizzy back in....ask me how I know.
