BA's Report on the '86 Carrera Values

Did anyone else happen to notice in the latest Excellence BA 911 values a jump in the values of the '86 Carrera? Is this a typo as I noticed the values of the 84-85 Carreras did not make a similar jump.

Its probably because he finally realized that the 86s represented the pinnacle shining moment in the 911s existance.

who'd want to sell a perfect car? Supply is down, hence price is up.

Yep, I saw the same. Very happy with BAs assessment. My '86 with 83K miles IMO is a 9 out of 10 and his book shows the price nearly $5K more than I paid a couple of years ago. Sweeeeet..... Man, I love that car....

My point being I am not seeing '86 Carreras go for no where near the prices in BA's market values. $19K for a "good" condition coupe? BA is living in a dream world. I think good '86 coupes are averaging in the $14k-$16k range right now.

I believe it depends on your location. An 86 Cab just sold here in SLC at the P-car dealer with 60K miles on it for $24K. I checked it out and it was in very nice condition. IMO, it was in very similar condition to my car. But then again, there are rarely any mid-80s for sale here and when there are, they seem to go in a hurry. In fact, I know of a guy who only deals in mid 80s P-cars in VG condition and he's told me that he has clients in the Park City and Deer Valley areas who will pay top dollar for top condition cars (he sold one about 18 months ago, a targa with 34K miles for $35K). He wanted to know where I got mine as he had not seen it for sale (this was a year ago) and if I were willing to sell it. Of course that was a year ago, who knows about now, but I would suspect since the economy has improved, so have the prices except maybe in Cal where the economy seems to be lagging the rest of the country....

I've got to believe it's a typo. How could an '86 be worth $1000+ more than a '87 in equivalent condition?

Interestingly enough, in the same issue there is an article about the '87-89s being the 'Sweet Spot".

Excellence has typo'd before - when I submitted my '86 purchase to " Readers sales reports", $18,000 was published as $8,000. The text said I got an OK deal.

I too noticed the $25,800 figure for an excellent example in BA's market report. Thought it was a typo, but what do I know?

Kinda funny how sometimes people find BA's market report far-fetched. I'm not saying I disagree, just that I don't know what else people are using to gauge the values of cars. What I also find really funny are the Panorama asking prices. Now some of those are downright silly!

Seems like the '86s are in the $15-$16K range right now for good cars...

Unfortunately (or fortunately for some), I see the current downward trend in pricing continuing. The rapid fall in pricing of the 996s is pushing just about everything lower.

What does Excellence say my '87 Targa w/159K miles is worth? It's in outstanding condition with all service records since new. I've had it in the 'for sale' section for a month (price now at $16K) with NO bites at all.

I think pricing is very sensitive to location. In Cali, you can probably look at a lot of Porsches in a weekend. At the other extreme, say upstate NY, you've got to look at what's available if anyhting.

Yep - location sensative - and John - think you'd be in the 14-15K range in California - In The NE it would probably be gone by now...

That was my point as well gerry100. Unfortunately in Cal, I believe there are still economic issues due to the tech bubble burst. Still a bunch of guys who were making way too much money in the tech arena, that bought up all the toys, and are still selling in order to pay the bills. Not the case in other parts of the country. I know SLC is not the P-car capital of the world, but there are plenty around but not many for sale. They go for much more than in Cal. I know several who have gone down there to buy because they are 10 - 20% cheaper and as gerry100 says, you can see a bunch in a day if want - not the case here...

I think the exposure would be great - you'll have lots of lookers - will have lots of stupid questions - take lots of pictures - You have a red sports car - you'll be appealing to every 40 year old male out there that hasn't gone though a mid life... HAHA

I think the '86 is probably valued so high due to its being the ultimate evolution of the 915 cars.

I went back and re-read the article and studied the prices. My conclusion is an error was made. I'll bet BA ment either $22,850 or $23,850 for excellent, $17,310 for good and $14,983 for poor ($2K less in all categories). This makes more sense if you read the article. JMO.
