Almost back on the road - 72 ST-clone (pics)
After almost 2 years of not driving her, "Gretchen" is nearly complete. She's been undergoing a rebuild after a bad crash at Mosport two years ago and has taken a looooong time to get through the straightening and body process.
Aside from wiring the 911R front and rear lights (thanks to Dave at TRE and Pelican) and powertrain installation, she's nearly done. Didn't have the time to get the front 911R lights painted yet. I picked them up from TRE while on a business trip to LA. What a cool place! It was Porsche hotrod heaven for me. At the moment, I've got the track decklid on and am building a matching splitter for the front. She'll be running a flat decklid for the street. ![]() ![]() ![]() The body is F/G with the exception of the rockers and roof. The guy that did the bodywork was a real perfectionist. It took a long time but the results were worth it. The power is from a 3.6 with a re-geared 915 w/LSD. Rick

Nice job! What did you use for rear flares?

Very nice! Sorry to hear about the off at Mosport, but it looks like she's going to be right again.

Shuie,
The rear flares were done using a GT-Racing SC F/G quarter with GT-Racing ST flares. I had previously done the ST Flares on the steel quarter but the crash bent all of that area. It was already poorly patched by the PO and I decided to go F/G to clean up the whole area. Crash damage: ![]() Rick

Hey Rick,
That wouldn't happen to be from an exit at the first corner after the straight, would it? |

Thrown Hammer,
Not sure about the horn grills. I screwed them in to see how they looked. They wouldn't sit right without modifying the F/G fenders. I was planning to make a replacement with 1/4 steel tubing and wire mesh. Not sure now. I might just paint the area black and leave it for now. Dave at TRE told me they were working on a set of 911R lights that covered the horn grill area also. Don't know when those are coming out. Rick

Dave,
Why yes it would. Were you a witness to my "learning process"? Lesson learned, actually many lessons.... Rick

LOL, no I didn't see it but it's a place that I have gone off as well once. Other than the "down hill ess" (I think it's turn 3 or 4?) I couldn't picture that happening anywhere else. I've done it in an Integra back when I could only dream of 911s. Even though it was front wheel drive, that deceptive little off-camber turn got me. My excuse was that it was wet although both earlier laps gave me a warning w/ a wiggle... got lucky and didn't hit anything. Good thing too b/c it would have been a long tow to Boston.
BTW, very nice car. That ST-flared shape is georgeous to look at. How big of a wheel/tire set up will you use? |

Dave,
The wheels/tires are 16x8 and 16x9 BBS and am running 225/45 and 265/45 Kumho Victoracers. Raynald, Thanks for compliments, I'll pass them onto Domenick (bodyman). I'm planning to be there but will need to dial in the car. I'm running out of time. I also think that the rear trailing arm was bent in the crash. I'll know more once I get it to the alignment rack. Hope to get there and meet you in person. Rick

Eeeeek, I think its butt ugly.
I can appreciate the work, but I don't like that rear wing with an 'S' type front. I also don't like the flares, but that's my opinion and according to the constitution here in South Africa, I am allowed to voice my opinion. Seriously, I don't like it, but it looks like a pro job. Cheers

I like it. It seems to look like a muscle car. Beautiful stuff.

Looks good to me.
No one would make the mistake of saying the 3.8 tail is easy on the eyes. But on the track, it earns its place at the table for other reasons. ![]() I love the color and the ST curves.

The 3.8 wing looks ok on a 964 but looks out of place on the earlier cars

2-3 strips (slats) of CF would be nice as horn grills.

Is Gretchen Gemini Blue? That is a great color and looks good in the rain.
re the tail - people are always making fun of others (esp. on eBay) here - I don't see the distinction as to fellow board members - except that they can answer back. I'm with JO on the tail - function is not always esthetic. |
