Oil Filter-AC Delco

I recently had a non-Porsche shop change the oil on my 79 911SC. They used an AC Delco filter. Now, I always use them on my 67 Buick. However, I'm not sure if I should have let them since I've read everything on the forum about Mahle filters. Suggestions? This may be a dumb question, but if I decide to change, can it be done without draining the oil? Also, anyone out there using a FilterMag? I have one on allmost all my cars, just haven't put one on the 911 yet. Thanks!

Only Mahle or Mann...not even ( heaven forbid!) Fram....

911 filters have/require some unique features...

I believe the AC Delco (and Purolator) have the necessary bypass valve. Can't recall for certain. For the price, they better have the correct filtering properties! I think these filters are more than twice the price of the tried and true Mahle OC-54 filter. I'll bet the Mahle is better than the Porsche OEM filter too. The OEM used to be made in Austria (930.764.107.00), but now it's something else with a new part number (930.764.107.01) The old filter looked much better, as I recall.

It seems the desirable, old ".00" Porsche part made in Austria is duplicated when you buy the Mahle Oc-54. That's all I use now.

You don't need to drain the oil (cool feature!). Just unscrew the old one and screw on the new one. You'll lose a few drops - no big deal.

P.S. - Welcome to the Board!

I may try to figure out if the AC has the bypass valve just to know. However, since it's that easy, I may just switch it. Thanks for the info and the Welcome! I've had the car for almost 4 years. I've pumped a lot of money into it. I've almost sold it several times. Now, I may had decided to reap the benefits of all that money and enjoy it. Maybe now, I can learn from people on the forum and do some of the work myself. That may make it more enjoyable and not just seem like a money pit. As a kid, I always wanted one and had an SC poster on my wall for many years. Thanks again. More questions/issues to come soon.

Craig,
Where are you geographically? This bbs and the friends met here and there make the self maintenance aspect of owning these cars a real plus. I, like you, also had the funding challenge for my out-serviced first 911. Now, almost all maintenance is done at home or with friends. Still not cheap but way better than the alternative. Very cool.

Chris,
I am in the northern suburbs of Atlanta. Northwest, but moving in July to directly north. I know owing a Porsche, just like owing an airplane, is not a cheap proposition. It's just frustrating paying premium $$ on labor rates and marked up parts. I probably would have done even more to the car if the prices to get it done had been a little more reasonable. Nevertheless, I love the Porsche and hope corresponding with you guys and doing things myself will help me feel better about keeping her in the garage.

Craig,
Welcome to the board. You certainly will not be "bored" with this BBS. I am fairly new to this board and have learned so much in a few months. Everyone has been so informative. I have really enjoyed working on my 911. It's been a lot of fun and as a plus, it has saved me some money. Also I have learned much from the 101 projects book that our host Wayne had published.

Before I learned about the Mahle oil filters, I had used a Fram. The gurgling noise it made drove me nuts so I replaced it with the OC-54 Mahle. I just put a plastic grocery bag over the filter while twisting it off. Didn't spill any oil.

I always used the old Red case Purolater PC260, till they became NLA. Switched to the Mahle OC 54 which is all I use now.

I did find the new white version of the Purolator L30260 but won't put it on my car due to the lack of the internal valve mechanism.

I saw a car a few weeks ago w/ the red filter, meant to ask where he got it but never got around to it.

Purolator

I too used to buy Mahle only oil filters until one of my mechanic buds told me that the puorlator l30260 is the sam filter. It is made in Austria, has the same internals, and even has a handy 1" nut on the end to help remove it.

It's also about the same price. Advance Auto here has them in stock and I keep forgetting to add a filter on to the other parts orders I place.

For what it's worth they look like a quality filter.

Has anyone found and used a Mann Oil filter lately?

If so could you share the Part number?

Craig, we're practically neighbors! Welcome to the board!

I know the feeling of frustration with high-dollar maintenance costs you're talking about, but there are plenty of Pelicans in this area that I'm sure would be glad to help you out, whenever you need it.

Doing your own work is definitely rewarding, not just cost effective, but there is a huge feeling of gratification that comes from learning about your car, not to mention the sense of accomplishment.

I'm brand new to the DIY crowd and it is really a lot of fun. Several guys here on the board have just talked me through a serious project and I've also received help from and met a few local P-Heads. You're in BETTER hands than AllState!

Randy

I'd get a new mechanic if I were you. I have one of each on my bench right now. The Mahle is heavier and has the oil bypass mechanism at the base. The L30260 is a flimsy P/O/S, it does have a spring loaded oil by pass mechanism what its doing at the far end of the cartidge I have no idea

Till I take a band saw to them this will have to do

We had a good thread that got pretty involved a while ago about oil filters.
