Has anybody ever left the narrow front fenders on with the fatties in the back? You should take a couple of pictures over all with just the rears on.

These guys are getting excited :D

My 77 911s is in the body shop having SC rear flares welded on and painted. I supplied them with the flares cut off of an SC. The shop told me the reason for the delay and the price was because they had to fab up the "innner" fender wall. They said that most of these flares come as a complete kit ,that would have the "inner" piece. Since mine does not have it, they will have to use a piece of sheetmetal and roll one to fit. They claim that my old one will not reach out to the lip of the new fender. By looking at this and other post that involve this kind of job, I have never seen or heard of this "inner fender wall. I'm I getting screwd?
Confused Rick |
Sorry dude, I am under my car right now, there is no double wall to the fender. It is one skin, all the way to the bumper, door and window!

You ever went by there to have them show you what they mean? I never have anything done to my cars without showing some serious presence. George |
Maybe the flares were cut too short and they have to add a patch to get the two parts to fit. But I have never heard of an "inner fender wall" on the rear of a 911.
|
That's what I thought as well, and yes I have been at the shop but I did not get them to show me the "Wall" . I will Tuesday.
Thanks Rick |
FYI, my 930 with factory welded in flares has no inner wall either.
|
Fiberglass flares have a little "lip" to use for mating and glueing... But no 911 I know of, has an "inner" piece of sheet metal. Technically a flare can't be cut too short, unless the old sheet metal on the car to get the new flare was already cut. That would be silly though, becuase you need the donor flare for fit...
I call BS... Why? who knows. Trying extract more $$ perhaps? |
it sounds like the shop doing the work on your SC has no prior experience doing turbo conversions...
|
Rick,
I've done these flares myself and have followed along on another car - I'll second that you're getting farked with no lube. Delays are fine but they better not be charging you more hours for this "problem". Let us know. I'm loaded for bear, with a bare chassis in the garage just dying to be your evidence. Why do people have to be pieces of shyte??? I just can't figure it out! |

sounds like they want to run a 3rd piece of metal underneath the joint like a run of duct tape, then braze the stuff together...kinda like adding tabs (not the LV version). From the work I've seen done, that isn't the right way to do it (but I'm no expert).

Sunset: What are you "peeling" as you weld? |
This is awesome. Thanks for posting all the pics.
|
In the second picture lableled "and then some grinding" Is the top of the weld bead hammered down so it is the same level as the body? I guess the question I'm really asking is what do you do with the protruding weld bead?
|
Sunset Fun,
Thanks for documenting the process, it sure helps me understand what's involved. All that carnage and you're not wearing scrubs (surgical garb)!!! |
