Simple Green on the fan
Quick question:
I've heard that simple green's not the best for an aluminum motor. True? Can I use it to clean some gunk and oil off of the engine fan while the fan is still installed? Adam

Adam,
Not sure about Simple Green on aluminum, but I do know we were NOT authorized to use it on military aircraft. I think that was more of an issue with damaging the acrylic used in the canopies and windscreens though. I'd recommend Greased Lightning - Auto and Shop. Worked like a champ on all my engine components when I had it out, including the fan. Just sprayed it on and worked it with a plastic detailing brush...cuts right through all the grease. Randy

I've had success with wheel cleaner. Some of the cleaners like automotive grade simple green will corrode aluminum and give it a whitish film.

Any engine degreaser you can buy in the can will do too. You can even spray it off after use. The water will go the way the air usually does.

Greased Lightening seems to have acid in it. I can't prove that, but the stuff is strong. I trust Simple Green, but it is hard on my lungs. I use it outdoors only. It has always kept my engines clean. I follow it with Tide.

Acid? Can you elaborate on that a bit, Zeke?

Someone posted the link earlier that was to a military test which indicated Simple Green could erode aluminum if left on for some time. I think the conclusion was that if you rinsed it off completely it was okay to use. Someone with a better memory than mine may have the link.
