912 to 911 Conversion Questions

OK this project has taken long enough (Two Years) and it all started with a rusty suspension pan...All the grunt work is done and just the fun stuff...left. haaaa

Need advice with wiring this thing up. What do i need minimum to make it run?

Car= 1969 912.
Motor = 2.7 with CIS.(early case turned into a 2.7 CIS)

How do I mate the two different electrical systems up???

I got the proper CDI box and voltage regulator and that seems easy enough, Regulator is pretty much like the 912 I just have to figure out what alternator I have and adjust accordingly, Right?

CDI goes to the three pin plug off the engine. Right? But it has a plug in the middle of the white wires between three prong plug and the motor.

Planning on using the 912 starter and solenoid wiring to turn the starter. Is that ok?

Are there any other components I need???

I hooked the fuel pump to a switched fuse, is that ok?

RPM Transducer?
What about all the other components I see on the diagram? Do i have to use them? Time and Temp switchs, etc.

I have the proper gauges (1971) which I presume will connect to all the extra senders on the motor and oil tank, that I can figure out later.

Anyone live near Santa Rosa California want to come by and take on a little side job? I'll pay...handsomely

I bought a 912 with 2.7 CIS some years ago, after helping the previous owner to put the car together. The wiring was done while I was away, but I remember re-doing some of it at a later stage, to make it neater and more efficient. My car didn't have the CDI so there I can't help you.

Fuel pump: Switched fuse should work fine. Where did you put the pump? At first mine was installed in the engine compartment, high up. Big mistake. It should be the lowest point in the fuel system - that's why Porsche put them under the fuel tank. One or two models had the pump in the engine compartment, but Porsche also realised their mistake and moved it to the nose, under the tank.

912 starter and solenoid will work just fine. I assume you are using the 912 gearbox? Low gearing will be somewhat irritating on the highway - the 2.7 should ideally be mated to 915 gearbox. But I never had other problems with 912 box. It's quite strong.

Take the rev counter to someone who can re-calibrate it. Everybody told me it can't be done, and then I found a place that successfully did it cheaply. Seems to be an easy job. If you don't do it the rev counter will over-read and show ridiculous rpm.

My engine had the time and temp switches - connected incorrectly when I bought the car. Somewhere on this BBS is a post where they explain exactly how it should be connected (3 years ago I think). I started the topic, just look under my name and you'll find it. If installed correctly the car should start and run fine even at very low temperatures.

Do you have a NON-LEAKING fuel pressure accumulator in the fuel system? If not, your car won't start when hot. See many posts about the topic. If you have a pressure leak in the fuel system, even a minor one, you will have the hot start problem. If you don't have a pressure accumulator you will also have the problem.

It is possible that the oil temp sensor and the oil temp gauge may not work together properly. There were different types. It may over or under read (or give an inverted reading). Just make sure they are of the same type (or even better, from the same car)

Regards
