I need some help, Alternator and Fan housing fitment

Hi folks,

I was getting my car ready for a trip, and discovered on this Thurs. night that my Alternator was shot and needed rebuilding/replacement. I took it to an alternator shop, and they didn't have one of the parts, so with the long weekend wouldn't be able to rebuild the alternator in time for me to make it to the event I was going to drive to. I'm having them fix it anyway as a spare, but called up my local autparts store and ordered up a rebuilt alt. for special saturday delivery.

Well I went and picked it up and it doesn't fit. I cleaned the fan housing to make sure it wasn't getting caught on anything, and it wasn't. The tips of the alternator studs just barely poke out of the back, nowhere near enough to get a nut on, let alone a air guide.

Here are the specifics:
The car is a 914/6 with a 3.0L SC in it. It was fitted with an externally regulated 55amp bosch (at the shop till tues ). I'm guessing the Alt. is the original /6 piece. The part that I ordered was to replace the 55amp alt, and was listed in the catalog as a substitute. It's a 70 amp, PPR (Precision Parts Remanufacturing) P/N MOA033 rebuild. No markings as to original manufacturer on it, but I have pictures:





The fan housing it won't fit in is a 5R. If anyone has had any experience with how much I need to take off to get this to fit properly it would be much appreciated. Alternatively, probably a better way to do this would be if someone could just measure how far the pulley is supposed to stick out from the fan housing. I searched but couldn't find anything that listed specific parts as to what alt fits in what housing and what the differences are. If I had my old alt. it wouldn't be an issue, but like I said it's locked up until well into next week, so bribing a machinist friend to alter my housing for me is my only hope for making it in time (assuming he gets back from vacation).
