Engine Mounted Oil Cooler

I recently replaced the engine oil cooler seals but did not have the cooler pressure checked. I still have an oil leak when running that drips off the bottom of the cooler.

All other common sources were taken care of - sender unit, breather gasket, t-stat o-ring.

How common is it for the cooler itself to spring a leak? It leaks a drop every fifteen to twenty seconds or so when the engine is running, two or three drops once the motor is shut off, then nothing.

deanp,

While a cooler leak is not common, it isn’t unheard of.

It is easy to remove and have tested. That is your next step.

Best,
Grady

It might be leaking from the case behind the cooler from the notorious slot and sleeve area. Clean with carb cleaner and JB Weld the slots. Do a seach on this BBS. It was the only leak on my rebuild. You can see its sister slot on the case between the oil cooler and Cyl #6
I'm dry now.

Dean,

Did you resolve this leak?? I'm dealing with the exact issue.
But, I had the cooler pressure checked and was told it was fine.
What did you end up doing?

Thanks

I haven't addressed it yet. I am waiting for some parts to be able to install the external thermostat, elephant lines and a trombone cooler. I plan to take a look at it then. Will let you know what I find.

It isn't uncommon for oil coolers to fail when tested. Mine engine one did and a friend of mine got quite a few used coolers that failed also.

I just came in from the garage after completing my oil cooler seal change! I don't think the "cooler" was doing very much cooling, as it was basically a big lump of grease. All nice and clean now. Took about 4-5 hours of greasy work. I'm chasing an annoying oil leak also, having replaced all the oil return tubes, pressure switch, and oil thermostat oring. Couldn't do the breather gasket as I couldn't access without removing so much stuff as to make it not worthwhile. Hopefully this was it..... .

My oil cooler has a LEAK ...

Rigged it to the air compressor, charged in to 30psi and dunked
it in a sink full of water. Bubbles galore, coming from the core
on the same side of the cooler the oil collected. A mystery solved.

Mine's now leak free. It was the oil cooler seals.
