Rough Running Engine

I know the possibilities are numerous. However, I figured I would ask anyway. I just got the engine back in the car (87 Carrera) and everything is hooked up. Turned the key and she fired right up. Unfortunately I had to keep my foot on the gas and there was what sounded like some minor backfiring too. My first thought was the timing was off but no adjustments can be made on DME. Where do I begin?
