Is it necessary to remove the battery box when using a Carrera style oil cooler?
My car is a ’72 T. The engine I’m prepping for will be a 3.2 short stroke primarily used for the street (maybe some DE’s). I’m also in the Louisiana. It gets warm here.
I did a search on this and found a few threads. The consensus was that removing the box improves airflow. Ok, I’ll accept that. However, there was no actual temperature data or real experience to indicate a serious problem from leaving the battery box in place when using a Carrera style fender mounted oil cooler. I really do not want to cut the boxes off if I don’t need to. I also do not want to run the RS front cooler. Anybody have any thoughts on this? Can I expect sufficient cooling when running a fender mounted Carrera style oil cooler with the battery boxes still in place? How about twin Carrera coolers? Is anyone running a Carrera oil cooler with the battery boxes in place and getting decent results? If so, can you give me an idea of your engine, driving conditions, and temps? TIA |

I'm running a 3.0 with no front cooler. At some point I'm going to ad one of those front oil cooler kits from BAT industries. I'm not going to remove the battery box. The 1969 911S had a front cooler with the box in place. SCs originally had just the loop cooler. My old SC run cool with just that cooler.

I will be putting a 28-tube brass cooler in my'69. I'll leave the battery box in, since I don't want to cut it out. The brass cooler should be good enough for my 2.7L. I was lucky enough to get the hoses to fit over the battery box off of Ebay. One of them has a 90 degree bend in it to fit over the battery box. They were new & especially for the years '69 thru '73.
