Electrical question

Question: My car often has problems starting, the solenoid clicks but the car does not turn over. I have checked the ground strap on the tranny a few times and the ground strap from the battery. Anyways, I know there is a wire that goes from the alternator to the starter. Could that being loose on the alternator end be the problem? Not sure if this means anything but I notice that when I turn my car on (running) the alternator light stays on for a couple seconds and then turns off. Could that be a sign of anything.

Also, I adjusted the point gap on Saturday and double checked and now the car won’t start. Could I have killed the coil somehow? The car started up immediately, the revs shot up and the engine died. Engine is getting gas, spark is questionable and I will check as soon as I get a second set of hands around.

Car is a 77 3.0.

Thanks,

David

Seems like a number of unrelated problems to me. The starter 'click' could be you starter solenoid needs replacing.

High rev followed by stalling could be too lean (it starts due to the cold start injector) or timing.

You might try to keep the car running by moving the air sensor plate manually, that will richen your start mixture.

Put a digital voltmeter on your starter and put the ground lead onto the engine. If your voltage is too low check the starter to body ground. If that is OK the problem is your ground strap. If it is not the problem is your lead or your battery voltage.

You need to see if you have a voltage drop, then find our where the voltage drop is. Otherwise it's a battery problem.
