engine start button advice

Okay, I've decided I can't live without an engine start button.

Just so you know, you still need the keys to start the car so it can't be stolen by simply pressing the button. After the installation you simply turn the key and THEN press the button.

This new/old 2 step proceedure adds to the automotive drama. It also seems to be back in fashion. The new Aston Martin has an engine start button, the BMW Z8 and Enzo have them. "oh, so if your friends jump off a cliff you will too, huh?"

It's all very logical, really, I already have the button, it's red and has "engine start" printed right on it. It even lights up at night so when your driving you know that earlier you did in fact start the engine. When you first get in the car if you forget what to do next you can simply read the button. I works on so many levels. Now I need some electrical advice.

On an 79sc what type of relay?

How do I wires it up? I found a post on how to wire one up to a Miata but I need instruction for this car. I don't want to make a mistake or disturbe any wires I don't have to.

Any electrical gurus out there?

Take a look at the electrical schematics. All you have to do is find the yellow '50' wire, which you can tap into at the fuse block on the fuel pump relay, and send 12V to it through your button.

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years.

Gerard,

Your car should have the wire for optional rear fog lamp already in the wiring harness ... taped & tied up behind the dash, and taped-up on the left rear tail-lamp wiring harness.

My suggestion would be to use the rear fog lamp lead to carry the signal to the relay that would be mounted on the rear electrical panel. Intercept the Yellow #50 starter solenoid lead at pin #1 of the 14-pin plug and re-route it to the relay. You can even install a remote starter switch on the electrical panel ... for those times when you would like to turn over the engine with the starter, and don't have an assistant around!

I did one and love it got the button
At Nappa for $9 and got the starter relay from Pelican for
Like $18. Then it was some trial and error to hook it up
All I have is the Haynes Manual and the wire diagrams
Aren’t correct for the wire colors.

I'll second Warren's advice on the engine compartment mounted second button. I used these on my drag cars to bump the engine when checking valve lash, timing etc. Very handy and easy to install inline with a dash button. In fact one would have come in really handy when I was first tuning my carbs and the engine kept stalling.

Thanks for all the advice, I'll post pictures of the install if it happens this weekend. Till then, I'm forced to start the car with the keys.

82sc,

You are correct sir, do you know of a start button that you like better? If I'm going to do this I want to do it with, among other things, the best button.

I thought this switch was neat as it lights up.

Then of course there's high quality Allen Bradley industrial stuff.

But I usually use a regular race car button with the rubber cover available at Summit Racing or Jegs.
