What's wrong with a York A/C compressor?

I am looking to tune up my A/C system, and was checking out past threads on the Sanden compressor replacement from Griffiths. I am will be changing to Duracool, and plan on getting the remaining R12 removed by a shop. I was thinking this would be a good time to add an extra condenser with fan in the drivers rear wheel well, the Griffiths Kuehl, seen here:

and if necessary replace the compressor. What I am trying to determine is if this is really necessary.

Reading their site, they state:
Quote:
If you want to improve your systems performance: cut down on weight, vibration and engine loads.... considering upgrading to our Kuehl-Sanden compressor
and
Quote:
The original York had a capacity of 164 cc as compared to the Sanden which has only 108 cc, a 35% reduction in capacity. Volume is not critical with this particular system layout (bigger is not better) as you consider the outcome of the project. The Sanden in comparison tends to run smoother and consumes less engine horsepower. If you are wondering whether you need a "more efficient" pump other than a wobble plate or swash plate, the answer (based on our observations and market experience) is no.
Reading this, I see that the York has more capacity than the Sanden, and in their opinion a more efficient pump is not necessary. They state that "bigger is not better", but is bigger worse?

The reasons they list, robs more HP, and more vibration don't mean much to me, I have lots of horsepower, and Vibration? It's a 911. It is a loud sports car with a stiff suspension.

So if my York is working, and I am not concerned about the HP and Vibration, is there a reason to change it?

Tom

I'm going to Sanden, the York leaks, is too big, and basically sux. I'm also getting the Griffiths condensor. Lots of people say it's too close to the CAT, but studies say otherwise. And propane will not go in my system. You're gonna start another war here, but opinions are like you know what. We all have them. Wait for ScottB to speak. And beleive what he says. MHO

Actually I think that's Jim Simms I was referring to. Oh, what the hell. Listen to them both.

Try and sell your york on Ebay. Offroad junkies LOVE yorks for making on-board air setups. I sold mine last year for a pretty penny.

Are you converting to 134 or staying with R12?

Tom,
I'd only consider switching over to a Sanden if the York compressor was leaking or compromised in any other way. I think you can get more cooling for your buck when implementing other improvements. How about a parallel flow condenser in place of the original?

I've read every thread on this sight about refrigerants and A/C components. I've listened to everyone talk their games, pro and con, It took me three months to decide. For me it's R134. There's a bunch of reasons. We got the environment, we have a small cab to cool, refilling if I keep non-barrier hoses is cheap, and the A/C gauges at Harbor Freight are 60 bucks. They won't last forever, but once a year they will do fine. I'm also probably gonna replace my rear condensor with ACkits version. I think they called it a parallel row or something like that, and I'm gonna pay the 3 dead presidents for the pro cooler. This is my decision, I'm sure there are a plethora of others that will disagree with me wholeheartedly.

My York doesn't leak (at least not yet), and too big isn't a problem for me. I can have it unbolted and out of the way in under 5 min.

Do you have any other reasons why it "basically sux"?

If it was not working, I would replace it with a Sanden. If a Sanden would make the A/C cooler, I would like to know why.

As to refrigarent, that horse has been beaten to death, there is no need to continue it here.

Agreed, never beat a dead horse. The york tends to leak at the head, does require more horsepower to drive, and is in the way. However I do admire that 5 minute ability. I would not suggest someone remove a working part unless they want it to work better. Again I would defer to those with more knowledge than myself, but Sandin and Seiko have the optimum products. Did this answer the question? Probably not, huh?

My SC had the factory York on in when I bought it. After getting tired of the thing trying to stall at idle whenever the A/C kicked in, and wanting to "upgrade", I switched to the Sanden. I wholeheartedly recommend the switch. You'd be hard pressed to tell when the A/C kicks in with the Sanden. Runs much smoother and doesn't put near the load on the engine.
