Hood and Rear Lid shocks
Has any one found a pair of shocks that will actually hold up either of these lids? I just replaced the oem with "strong arm" brand replacements and after a few days they will no longer hold the rear lid or the hood open. $100 down the tubes any ideas...... besides the golf club?

Gerard - I ordered new struts from our host, installed them months ago and they still hold when needed. I have found they do have a short life expectancy, but they still shouldn't have quit as quickly as they did in your case. Keep the 9 iron handy or send them back.

Same here. I ordered mine (2 pairs) from Pelican Part, best price, and work great!

I find this rather strange. I am biginning to wonder if PP has changed brands in the recent past.

Get the heavy duty shocks from our host. They'll hold. If they're the Weltmeister shocks, I think they have a lifetime warranty.

the only ones i found where
Front Hood Shock, 2 Per Car, 911/912 (1965-89), Each C-511-331-01 just noticed there are others in the later section Heavy-Duty Front Hood Shock, 911 (1974-89), each [Photo] C-511-331-HD do these fit the later models? if so , why doesn't PP list em in the early section, cause the ones i have are utterly useless

I've not had any problem with the trunk lid shocks, but I ran into a problem when I installed a Carrera spoiler. I put a so-called heavy duty shock in, but it isn't up to it. In transit as we speak from our host, is a dual shock set-up for the engine lid, as well as another heavy duty shock. I'll try both when I install the new CIS airbox cover that is on its way, also.

I had my car in to a dealer a couple months ago, and while it was there I had them replace the hood and deck lid shocks with OEM units. The hood shocks work great, but the deck lid shock was like it wasn't even there. A day later I took the car back for a replacement. "Probably defective", they said. I thought "why didn't they test it before I left the first time?". So they replaced the shock, and said "these things wear out really fast". Uh huh. In one day? So I tried it myself before I left the dealer. No difference whatsoever. I'm not even sure they changed it out. And I don't even have a tail on my lid. Won't be going back there again.

I run a prop bar in the back -- which allows easy rear decklid changes, and never sags. In the front, KevinP73 on this board drilled out an old shock for a pin to go in. Now it stays up, and doesn't come down, even in gusty winds.

I have dozens of old ones that appear to have pressure but won't hold the lids up, I bought the heavy duty ones from PP last year , they still work, a new personal best.
Here is what the factory does on their liteweights. ![]()

My 'Pelican Parts struts' are the same as previous OEM, same manuf., same part number.
Same part fits my '66 and '87 so that's why the same PN is in early and late sections. Maybe a bad patch? My single rear strut holds up a 964 lid which is 10 pounds heavier then a 'normal' lid. BTW hang on to your old weak struts, they work great if you go to a lightweight F/G hood or ducktail.

Here's an interesting factoid....
I replaced HD shocks that lasted a reasonable 10 years...with Weltmeister HD shocks. The Weltmeisters came from "another source" ( not Pelican)..because I claimed the lifetime warranty of the originals purchased elswhere 10 years ago.... Anyway...as I try to install the rear shock, I notice that no matter how much I lift the engine lid to get better pin access...the lid simply can't be held up "high" enough for anything to fit...Hmm...it attaches to the firewall, but there is NO WAY the head of the opposite end can enter the hinge bracket. So..I take it back out and notice...the overall length ( hole-to-hole) is about 1.5 hole diameters TOO LONG. I had to unscrew the ends....shave off about 1/8" of the "head" ( pot metal piece with the bushed hole), dressed up the threaded female connection and reassembled. Now the overall length mimics the factory OEM, as well as the previous HD shock...and it fits. Why does this happen? Being "off" by more than 1.5x the hole diameter is not a small error !! ---Wil

Purchased a set front and rear from our host. Still working great. Had to detach rear as the hood kept coming up. I keep a short FB rod in the car now.

I came home and emailed PP about it and they said that I have the right part. Well, I don't have the right part unless I put a heavier (duck) lid on. Working on that. I don't know what a guy is supposed to do. Sounds like some get a good one, some get a weak one and 2 of us got a zinger. |
