clutch release fork positioning question

I put my rebuilt motor in today, and am at the point of adjusting the clutch. However, I'm concerned as to whether I seated the clutch release fork properly in the release (throw-out) bearing.

I installed my clutch release lever and helper spring, and put tension on it, but found that, if i line up the mark on the small positioning lever with the mark on the end of the cross shaft, the lever is at least a quarter inch or more out of position, in relation to the lever.

My questions are, does this sound as if I didn't properly install the fork, and is there a way to check, without dropping the engine again?

I'm a bit frazzled with this, and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
