MFI system for a 3.0+ engine

I’m thinking of going to MFI on my rebuild. I know that TEC3 or Motec would be better but they sound Greek to me. I can CMA pretty easily at the house and I wouldn’t have a clue how to try to sort an engine management system.

I’m looking for a core MFI system for this rebuild. My engine is either going to be a hi-comp 3.0 or a 3.2 short stroke (I’m still not sure what pistons are already in there) built from a later 930/16 small port SC motor.

Is a 2.4T MFI (pump 0408 126 015) system a good core rebuild candidate for a hi-comp 3.0 or a 3.2 short stroke?

Can my existing cams be fit with a drive gear for the pump, or will I need a set of cams from a MFI motor?

I’ve read that the T pumps are desirable for these kinds of rebuilds. Are they desirable because a T is a less coveted car or is there a real functional advantage to using a T pump?

What about the stacks? A 2.4 T had the plastic stacks that cannot be bored out, but it also has the better/safer cold start nozzles. The early E Mag stacks can be bored out, but have the cold start nozzles in the air box, right? What’s the best option?

The lines seem easy enough (new).

How about the injectors?

Any other thoughts or advice?

TIA

Sherman, make sure to read this thread before making any decisions. It's sure to clear up a lot of issues.

Thanks Greg. I read that again just to make sure I wasn’t already confused enough. I bookmarked the thread in my MFI favorites folder.

To say I’m a MFI novice would be a stretch. I can follow CMA and keep my 2.4 running, but that is the extent of my knowledge. From the threads I’ve read about the custom 3.0+ MFI setups, I’ve got a few more thoughts and questions:

-As long as the pump cam and the cam in the engine are matched I’m assuming that delivering enough fuel is not a problem. Is this a safe assumption?

-A bigger challenge than delivering enough fuel is getting enough air into the combustion chamber. Custom manifolds and linkage are obviously not cheap or easy. Boring out the early Mg manifolds is the most efficient route to get the most air through the intake. Is this correct?

Sherman, PM P-Thomas. He has a 3.5 with MFI. I am sure he would be more than willing to answer any questions you might have. Also, keep in mind that there is a huge difference between a motor running with MFI and one running "right". In other words, you might get away with a T pump but you would never maximize the motors potential.

Thanks Halm. P-Thomas old MFI threads are in my MFI bookmarks as well. Im going to PM him for sure about details once I get a slightly better grasp on some of this stuff. Ive bugged him too much with questions on basic MFI and how to fit 7" wheels on a narrow body already .

I just bookmark them in my browser. In Internet Explorer just go to the "favorites" pulldown, then "add to favorites". You can also create folders to keep things organized.
