first time engine drop/reverse switch

On the passenger side of transmission above where the the cv axle attaches is a small black quarter sized switch(?) with two wires coming out of it. How does that sending unit come off of the transmission. I dont see a screw or nut. Does it just pop off. I hate to pry it off and break it. planning on seperating the engine and trans. to replace an input shaft seal.... assuming I dont drop the engine on my head.

qikcpa,
The sensor you see goes to the tachometer. There is a connection in the tunnel between the passenger seats and front seats. You will need to access this to disconnect the shifter from the transmission control rod. The wire connector is in there. disconnect it and feed it thru the opening back towards the transmission. The reverse switch is near the front or "nose" of the transmission and disconnects at the trans. The sensor is held to the transmission by a small arm. There is no need to remove the sensor unless you have a tach problem. Good Luck!

Doug hit the nail on the head. To clafiry: There is no connection between that sender and your engine.

Cheers, George

2.7racer I saw the connection in the tunnel. I labeled and then disconnected. It didnt look like the connector would fit through the hole. go figure. Ill give it a shot. thanks

I need to replace the rubber boot that the wire fits through. I cant seem to get the other side of the H connecter disconnected. Is it meant to be disconnected or is this a cut the wire pair & duct tape it back together kinda thing.

I am confused. Just pull the boot off with the wire and connector!

qikcpa,
Warren is correct, the sensor goes to the speedometer, not the tach as I originally stated. The connector inside the tunnel should come apart. Try again. I've done this to my 76 and my sons 86 several times. It may be useful to get some light on the connector to see exactly how it is separated. Good Luck!

thanks, appreciate the help. I got it through the tunnel and just wrapped it around the output flange of the transmission, no sense doing more work than i have to. Funny thing is there is no bolt or cliip holding it on. I found a picture in a prior post. I'm guessing someone may have at one time RTV'd it in place. go figure the dreaded PO.

There should be a hole next to the recess where the sensor goes in. It is M6 size. There should also be a small wire-like clip that is screwed into the M6 hole and holds the sensor in place.

If the clip and M6 bolt are missing, I imagine you can fashion a clip up with a variety of material: 1) wire hanger, 2) aluminum piece with a hole, 3) buy one from Porsche ($5 I imagine)
