I haven't had a similar problem, but I'd be willing to bet your alternator and/or regulator are shot. Put a volt meter on the alternator and check your readings when you turn on the lights, hit the brakes, etc.

Bad earth is also a possibility. I saw a car that had no brake lights only when the engine was turning. Cleaning the earths solved the problem.

Does the blinker indicator (arrow in the dash gage) also get dimmer when the blink rate slows? Or possibly both indicators glow dimly? You may have one blown brake lamp bulb. Do a walk around and check all the lights and have someone watch your brake lights for you.

Bad ground or blown bulb will both account for this symptom. Other things can also cause this symptom, but might as well start the diagnosis with the cheap items!

There's a ground wire near the right rear tailight assembly that could cause this. As I recall, you'll need to remove the housing to access it.

Yeah... a bad earth/ground could easily be the problem. Most likely in or around one (or both) of the tail light assemblies. It's fairly easy to pull them apart and clean all of the contacts.

If it is the fan belt slipping, then the same thing would not happen at idle (or at least, I can't think why). Easy experiment, anyway. PS... I had a similar problem... it was a bad ground in one of the tail light assemblies. -MAS
