Burns oil after sitting 6 years

Purchased an 81 911, stock with 50K miles, that was sitting in a hanger for 6 years, minimum. Finally got it started...runs great, but oil smokes like crazy. Normally, I'd put some Marvel Mystery Oil in the top end, but not on horizontal pistons. So, drained oid, then put 6 qts of oil, 3 qts. mystery, and a new filter. Have run engine about 10 minutes total so far. Smokes after running 30 seconds, not before. Seems to be a little better

Q : What's the most likely cause of the burning oil .... gumed oil rings?
Will the Mystery oil clean the rings? How long should I leave it this way?
.Am I doing any harm by running it?

Thanks to anyone with an idea

IMHO, it's stuck rings. They may break free, but it could take quite a bit of driving at varying loads & RPMs.

Certainly, that's the 'cheap fix' and the method I'd try first.

Be aware that Marvel is going to dramatically drop your viscosity, so avoid too much hot running and stay out of traffic (Always a good idea if your car is smoking. Gives us 911 drivers a bad name)

Maybe a couple of late night freeway blasts are in order.

You might throw in plugs with a higher heat range to avoid fouling.

You are sure you haven't overfilled the oil tank?

That's too much Marvel Mistery Oil. It will thin your oil significanlty and has no good lubrication characteristics by itself either.

What are you trying to do? Free up the rings? Like they may be stuck? They should have come loose by now, don't you think?

I hate to say it, but usually there is a reason cars get parked. I have learned this myself the hard way. My bet is that something was royally wrong with the car and that's why it got parked.

Here is what I'd do: I'd dump the MMO for straight 20W-50 and drive the car. See if that helps, not just idle and rev it. If there is a true load on the engine, that's where the rings really get massaged and squeezed out to the bores to seal.

Hope this helps.

Cheers, George

Does it smoke more when first starting up?
Have you checked leak down?
Does oil burning change with engine temperature?

After you've verified that its not a ring stuck, and I kind of feel that this should be about over by now

Scored cylinder walls can be a culprit if it was ran with bad filters or dirty oil. Did you know that dirty air filters are blamed for most lawn care machinery failures.

I would look at thicker oil for diagnosis at least. In iron cylinder'd bores I have actually had good experience with "Restore". I don't know if it has any application in Nikasil bores. May need to check valve seals also if she blows blue at start up by then cleans up.

Both great Ideas! I've been running it for a couple minutes and letting it set for a day, then doing it again the next day. I'm about 3 days into it. I also think it's about time to put in some 20-50 and hit the road (with my AAA card, of course).

NO smoke at startup, but burns oil after about 30 seconds, more as it gets hotter.

Make sure you don't have it overfilled. I'd take it around the block, no need to go on a road trip. If it persists, time for compression check!

Load it with clean oil, and drive it gently till it's hot. You need to get it warmed up. Maybe oil sitting in the muffler, who knows. Either way it needs to be started and heated thoroughly.

Good point, Randy.

I had oil in the muffler once. The symptoms were similar.

a few drops of automatic tranny oil in your gas will give interesting results too

Makin,

I think you most definitely have oil collected in your muffler and cat! If the oil was being burned in the combustion chamber ... it wouldn't take 30 seconds to start burning!!!

I suggest draining the MMO oil mix from sump and tank ... and replacing it with Valvoline Max-Life 20W-50 high mileage oil.

Also, pull off the muffler and cat ... and fire up the beast and see if there is any smoke??? I suspect you won't find oily-sooty deposits on the upper part of the heat-exchanger pipes, either!

But, you probably WILL be able to drain oil out of the cat and muffler!

I've purchased two T cars now that have sat for over three years. The oil seems to creep into the cumbustion chambers and smokes like crazy when you first run them. Keep on running them for about 20 minutes or so and they may just clear up.

it needs to be driven for a few hours, you`ve got a lot of catch up to do.Good advice so far,Marvel MO is good stuff and even if you do another oil change (recommended) it will keep working.lf you`ve got good oil pressure put some Techron in a full tank of premium and go for a good drive...Italian tune up?

I ran it again today, and now it's waiting utill about three minutes into running it before it starts to smoke. Maybe there is oil in the muffler. I'm changing the oil this weekend, and gonna run it raw!

my car sat for 12 years. the first time i started it. i turned the neigborhood white with smoke. my mom screaming at me, made me shut the car off for another two years. once i got it running. the smoke cleared and now the car is smoke free. white billowy clowds of smokey goodness. it was embarrassing.

Cliff ... if you had mixed a pint of Malathion in the gas ... you could have told your mother you were treating the mosquito problem in the neiborhood!!!
