Short shift causing problems?

I'm starting to think a short shift is causing transmission problems. Since these transmissions can't be shifted too fast that it can only cause trouble. Therefore what good is a short shifter if you can't use it?

You hit the nail on the head. "what good is it ? no good.
That is why I have a box full of short shifters for 911. We take them off of customers cars whenever they are having shift related problem. If you shift slowly and carefully they work fine, but what fun is that. There are some every expensive shifters out there that seem to work well but "just say no" to short shift kits.

I had my transmission rebuilt at a well-respected shop in the S.F. Bay area. The syncros and several gears were shot. My SC had a Weltmeister short-shift kit installed by the previous owner. The shop told me that the Weltmeister does provide a shorter throw then the factory short-shift kit BUT that they feel it causes too much strain on the syncros and gears. The Weltmeister kit changes the throw and the leverage on the shifter. When you shift more pressure is applied, causing premature wear and failure. I had them install the factory short-shift kit. The transmission shifted like butter, both up and down thru the gears and no more problems. They sold me, and the factory kit was less expensive then the Weltmeister.

Great post Henry, I have been running the WEVO for my 930 trans the last year and while it's a great shifter I'm starting to think it's been the cause of my trans. problems. I just inspected the shifter and made a couple changes so time will tell. In the end I will probably end up going back the stock shifter and just find a way to tighten up all the slop, that is if my trans. needs work again. Or get race dogs for 2nd and 3rd to add some longevity.

Yeah, I've got a Weltmeister short shift on the 914 and it's coming off. On the other hand, my '86 has a factory installed short shifter and I really like it. It's not radically shorter than the SC's, but just enough. I'm sold on the factory setup.

OK, if I have a short shifter in my car (how can I tell for certain?), then what do I have to do to get rid of it?

Do I have to buy a whole new shift lever?

I don't know guys, whenever I am in a car with a regular shifter, I immediately feel like driving a dump truck or a school bus at best. I think Henry hit the nail on the head. You need a *good* short shifter, then it's the best of both worlds. Don't say all of them shuck.

Nice topic, was about to go for the M241/factory short shifter, but first I changed the tranny fluid for Swepco 201 (cost me about 82 euro = $90, to get the stuff here in Europe though!!!). I felt a slight difference, so then decided to change the 4 bushings. Especially the ones in the coupler were worn. Then re- adjusted the gearlever and.... it shifts like a dream. I like it so much that I decided not to go for the short shifter anymore. Ofcourse I cannot compare the fss to the my setup but I am more than happy know.

I like my chopped stocker. 4 inches off the top and she feels much much better. The Wevo's I felt have been wicked-short, I don't think I would like using on in my car.

I´ve the factory kit with the seine systems kit. All bushings have been changed and swepco oil has been added. However no comments yet, as I´m now bleeding brakes.

does the short shifter come stock w/ a 77 RS? i recently got to drive one and i knew instantly that it was a short shifter. is it really THAT hard to shift it from gear to gear? it sucks that you can't shift it that fast & to think that's what short shifters are for. tsk tsk
