Yep. right after it was raised up for the PPI, when I bought it.

Had both shafts repacked and resealed with new rubber. No big deal.

Of course. I'm still looking for a source for the streamlined boots.

Yup. Just replaced one recently. Not bad considering they've been on the car for about 8 years.

I wouldn't think so, except for racers. I've heard the streamlined ones last longer, but I don't know for sure.

85 lowered carrera. When I did a lot of track events I would tear both rear CV boots about every 6 months. Bought about 6 pairs of boots over 4 years- actually got pretty good at changing them. Car doesn't see the track much anymore- race SM, put new rear axles on last year- thanks Pelican- so far so good.

I drove from 92 to 98 on torn CV boots in my 911. In 98, one fell off on a two hour run at a constant 150mph. These cars are built well.

Most guys race with stock boots and have no problems.

On a race weekend at California Speedway I destroyed 3 stock boots in one weekend. That was my first boot failure in the 3 years I have had that car. I think part of the reason 2 failed was that I used too much grease on the CV joints. At 135mph for a couple hours the excess grease may have got into the bellows of the boot and then caused the boot to go eccentric at speed.

Now I use high quality CV grease that requires very little grease.
It is a bit overkill but I replaced the stock boots with Smart racing aero boots. They look like the CV boots you might see on an open wheel race car. This is a very compact boot that could never go eccentric. I doubt they provide any aero gain on a 911.

Check with Smart racing or Wevo for the boots and grease.
Pelican does not carry either of these parts.

Yes.

Tore mine when I had the engine out of the car. Left the axles dangling for a while like a dope and that caused the outer boot to tear. Not a bad job to do if you have a big impact wrench or 3/4" breaker bar to get the big locknut off (85.5 and later axles) the stub axle. The rest is just messy grease work.

I always use a tie wrap on the center fold of my street car.

I use a grease that's like ultra sticky. I watched a grease engineer play with it between his fingers when I first showed it to him.. he was really interested in it and was going to test it when installing 911 valve guides in his exotic high end work shop. who knows?
