Installing turbo rubber on RSA

Hey everyone,
Well, as impatient as I am I'm trying to get the turbo rubber installed on my stock RSA tail before the sun goes down. There's a total of 17 fasteners that hold the rubber on... it took 30 minutes to get the first 14 off... still working on the last three about an hour later. Had to take a break before the heat killed me (91F man I hate living here in the summer...). I will post some pics when the new rubber is installed though.

Andrew

Unhappy

Few things can make a man cry... once of them is getting your old rubber off, and getting ready to fasten your new rubber to the spoiler and realizing... hey they shipped the wrong damn rubber!

now before people start going "well, you should have checked" I did check! The spoiler arrived at work and my boss and I both thought it looked kind of funny, but we said, well mayber it just looks odd off the car, so we looked up the part numbers, it had a 930 part number, and it matched the early turbo part number... but of course, we never stopped to think that the bag the rubber was in had the correct part number, and the part itself had a 965 part number

*sigh* oh well... I'm too lazy to put the old one back on... I guess I'll just get a correct part overnighted to me tomorrow.

If you hate living there in the summer, you should try living here in the winter! A virtual No Porsche Zone and cold, damp garages to work in.

Good luck with your project.

Hmmm, sorry no pics because I just finished installing the correct 930 rubber piece, and it's dark outside.

All in all it wasn't so bad. I hate drilling fiberglass, but at least I only had to drill two holes. I am very concerned about one thing however. I knew the rubber piece would fit, because we've installed it on an '85 or therabouts carrera, but he never tracked the car. My whole reason for putting the turbo rubber on was to get every once of downforce possible without going to a 3.8 tail. The upper surface of the tail (the side with the air inlets) fits pretty well, but the bottom surface of the rubber sticks out maybe 5mm above the fiberglass. I'm worried that this is going to act as such an "airbrake" that there won't be nearly as much air getting over the rubber and making downforce as there should be... I guess without a windtunnel i'll never really know, but I'll see what my boss has to say about it after the 4th of July weekend's over. Pics to follow though!

Very cool car. Sorry I like the OE rubber. To me the Turbo rubber has always looked...... heavy some how?? I am sure it gives more down force. I bet that car is a blast. I actually really love the duck tails on 964s for some reason. I know the downforce is inferior.

Thanks,
I was partially going for that unique look. I didn't post a pic of the front splitters, but I really think those, along with the turbo rubber just make the car looks aggressive and mean, especially when you get it low to the ground. I'm a little pissed about the 4mm the rubber hangs over on the bottom, but we've looked and decided it shouldn't affect too much at all, it's just going to bother me that it's not perfect. Apparently, the RSA tail, is the only one of it's kind. For reasons I can't figure out, it actually is completely different than the carrera tail.

Lol, I'm a huge fan of the ducktails too, so I guess I have to respect that. The OE rubber looks good as well, but I just think it's neat that you can do such a simple changeout and have so much more downforce. Believe it or not, there's almost no weight difference between the two at all.

The added downforce really is nice though. When they built the 965 turbos they went to a wing that made less downforce because the bodies had been cleaned up so much that they didn't make nearly as much lift and there wasn't a reason to use a wing that added so much drag. So, putting the high downforce rubber on the low lift body makes for significantly less overall lift at speed than a 3.3 turbo
