Chart/Map of Jack points on 88 911
I'm looking for a refernence chart of proper jacking points for my88 911 coupe.
Want to jack it in the right place and would love a chart! Thanks, Kevin |
Kevin, I don't have a chart with me to post, but on the 87-89 Carerras it's very easy to spot the jack points. There are 4 square jack points, 2 on each side, one forward of the rear wheel arch and one aft (nautical lingo) of the front wheel arch.

If you look at the 2 pics I posted on this thread, you can clearly see what Jim is referring to (at least the rear shot is obvious). That's what I rest my car on when on jack stands, but use a jack pad inserted into the rocker 'jack points' on each side to actually raise the car. Raise one side of the car, place on jack stands, then raise the other side. Caution: Take it slow & easy...if I'm raising (or lowering) my car more than a little bit, I'll do each side a little at a time.

arrows C and D

Your '88 has a small jack point just behind the front tires and just in front of the rears. It's a bump about 1" tall and 2" across.

Am I missing something in the question here? In the diagram that Bill posted, points C & D indicate the positions where the 2"x2" pads (that Steve references) are located (on the Carreras). But for actually jacking the car up (unless you're using a lift, etc. and raising the car using all 4 'pads' at once), are you guys suggesting that these points be used to actually jack up the car? I don't see how...please explain. Why wouldn't one use a jack pad inserted into the rocker 'jack point' (unless rusted, etc)? Thanks...Keith

I use the jack points primarily for placing jack stands after lifting the car with the rocker panel inserted lifting pad. But I have also lifted the car from these jacking points and the engine technique (trusting Chris Bennet implicitly). The short wheel base of the 911 does make high lifting from a single jacking point dangerous (tipping factor).

BTW, Bill's photos/graphics are superb. Thanks.

Thanks - that was extremley helpful - the suggestions and pictures are exactly what I was looking for!
Thanks a million, Kevin |
Bill, great images with your post!

I am going to paint my wheels tomorrow and would like to know if there is a similar spot to jack up the whole FRONT of the car, I understand the way to jack up the rear is the engine, and then supply the jack stands at both D points, but how would I do this to get the front of the car up so I can put jack stands at both points C??
I hope my question is clear and would love a simple answer to a complicated question. Thanks, Sammy |
+1
i'd also be grateful for ideas on how to get a jack underneath the front splitter rubber lip ... i need to replace the airco crash bar & protector and need to get underneath |

do what you gotta do |
ok, i have had several 911s. i do read the owners manuals sometimes, as they actually have good info in them. the manuals clearly say NOT to jack up the 911 by its engine. my 85 Carrera manual has the warning on page 76.
so is it, or is it not, ok to raise a 911 by its engine case? i have done it, but i do wimp out and use a heavy piece of rubber on the jack pad to cushion the load a bit. this is a great thread, i did not know there were so many hard points on the underbody. i am going to be working on my 85 targa and my 87 slopenose this weekend. should be lots of floor jack use i am sure! |
if you use the engine
use a thick roll of newspaper (the sunday new york times) to cushion the bad against the case.

Hey All,
I am looking under my 88 Carrera Cabrio for jacking points. I have to rebuild all of the brake calipers and replace all of the rubber brake hoses from not using the car much. I bought it new and it has only 15k on it. I want to jack up the car and put 4 jack stands on it, so I can do all the wheels but one at a time.. Should I use points C&D for jacking and the jacking tubes for jack stands? Or the torsion bar caps for stands? Thanks Jack 1988 911 Carrera Cabriolet |
