Identify this wire for an SC

Can you identify this wire from the wiring harness on an SC. The wiring harness is an 81 SC, engine is an 82.





I can't figure out where it goes. It's position suggests it goes around the 1 - 3 cylinders. Maybe it's extra for the air pump (which I don't have on my year)?

Any thoughts?

I have a similar wire on my 78 -- mine connects to part of the vacuum system (attached to the CIS at the #3 cylinder).

I have the same wire also on a '78 that connects to the "Thermo Valve" part of the CIS system.

I tried to look it up in the Pelican catalog for you but there is no listing of a "Thermo Valve" for a 1982 model?

Here is a image of the part that the wire connects to on a 1978. The plug connects to the back of the valve and its not shown in the image below.

My '81 doesn't have anything that looks like what you are holding in your hand in picture #1.

The gray connector in picture #2 is what's hooked to my oxygen sensor after it is threaded through the engine tin.

Both pictures represent the same item. I'll look around the number 3 to see if there is a connection. The wires are brown and red/white if that helps anyone.

There is another similiar wire that goes up around the plug near the oxygen sensor connector but this one is different.

Looks like the heater wire connections on the O2 sensor to me.

No heated O2 on SCs. Mine has the same thing, connected to nothing. As I understand it, it goes to a vac cannister that is not on late model SCs.

On my 83 Euro it goes to the thermovalve. My CIS setup is like the 79.
Maybe it's just not used on the US model. Th wire bassically provides + and - while the engine is running to heat the element inside the thermovalve and open it. Much like the bimetalic strips in the AAR and the WUR.

The thermovalve is not a Bosch part as far as I know.

My 82 SC has a similar connector that goes to nothing also. Cabled tied into a bundle with black tape over the connector.

It's the vacuum switch wire to the red item in the diagram posted. Do you have plastic fuel lines?

Mine had it, I didn't know what it was for, I even posted the question. then I found that it fit perfectly on the connection for my heated O2 sensor (from a later model year) so i assumed that it was it is for.
Oh well, even if it wasn't intended for that use it works perfectly.

I have a blank pair of wires with no connector in the same location. I figured it was going to the alternator (before it was converted to internally regulated). But that's just a wild guess. I figured if it runs great without, why worry!?

Does yours run good? When did you find this?

I looked up the thermo valve part number using PET and it has the part #911 606 106 01 for a '82 motor. When you look this up in the Pelican catalog it shows up '77 to '79 but PET says different?

I just finished my rebuild and the only conector like that went to my Thermo Valve.

Background: I'm rebuilding my engine with a new wiring harness. I found an '81 harness that I figured would be close enough for an '82. I bought it off a Pelican member who actually got it as part of a liquidation of a Porsche shop.

Anyway, I looked at the wiring diagram in Bentley's and it appears that it goes to something called the auxiliary air valve. Now, I have no idea what the auxiliary air valve might be and could find no further reference. Maybe that is what Simon is referring to as a Thermo Valve.

Now, what is the heated O2 sensor? Where is that located? Is that something on later cars?

Since you have a hybrid setup. Compare the wiring diagrams from different years. When I recovered my harness in heat shrink, I eradicated the wire that was hanging free that goes from the alternator to the extternal regulator. Why? Since the VR is now combined in the alternator, I hated taped wires and a connector hanging free.

If the connector serves no purpose for your year model and there are no ramifications to leave it free, dont sweat it.

the aux air valve looks like the red thing in the picture above. It's located over the #6 cylinder and causes faster idle when the engine is cold but I don't believe it will accept that kind of connector. The SC I had had the same wires that didn't connect either.

I'm going to take a look at it tonight and if I can't find a link there, then I'm going to say it's extra and not worry about it.
