Jeff if you can't find one you can always recut the threads to a standard size.

If your looking for a 16mm X 1.0 (fine thread) good luck ! I just went through hell for 2 weeks finding one. No P car because of a freakin' nut.
PP doesn't have them. I finally found them at Parts Heaven in No. CA. They've got tons somehow. Get ready for this.......$15 bucks plus $5 for shipping. They've got you by the balls (or nuts). I subsequently found that just buying the 16mmx1.0 die was only about $14.95 and for that price someone could make them by the hundreds. It turns out the the threads are so fine that they are easily cross threaded and then striped after a few on and off cycles.

I would think industrial supply houses like McMaster-Carr, MSC, Graingers, etc...would have them.
Or do a Google search for nuts/bolts. Surprising places turn up that way. --Wil

I can save you some time there. I already tried that. Searched up the ying-yang. Got close, but it's an odd-ball size/ pitch combination if this is, in fact, what you need.
I did find only one vendor on e-bay that acutally had the tap ( I mistakenly said die before). I'm tempted to buy the tap and make a bunch, and then given them away for free just to piss Parts Heaven off.

#934, M16 x 1 steel hex nut, $87.95 per 100 ($.88 each plus shipping); 50 piece minimum. Spend $50 and you'll have 49 extra nuts to give away ![]() The above vendor also sells M16x1 taps. Last edited by Jim Sims; 07-07-2004 at 09:17 PM.. |

Got excited for a while.
Their m16x1 is 24mm across the flats. the alternator nut needs to be 22mm. This probably wouldn't work if one has the double air pump pully as I have. It may work on the single pully however. What is actually needed is a "jam" nut. Low profile. 8mm in height I think. But their jam nuts don't come in the M16X1.

When I replaced the original alternator on my '76 with an internally regulated Valeo unit, the Valeo unit came with hex nut that was 24 mm across the flats. Worked fine with the double pulley (second pulley groove was used to drive the air pump); just couldn't use the socket wrench that comes in the factory tool kit. Bought a cheap 24 mm socket to keep in the car to change belts on the road. If you really need a thin nut (I doubt it) like a jam nut then get one of the standard height nuts and have a machinist turn it down (a simple lathe operation); this would be a lot cheaper than making one from scratch. Cheers, Jim

Different year but similar theme: My Nut-scapaides:
NLA alternater pulley nut 1969......special order kit? what's that? On the positive the thin threads, from my understanding, make the nut more vibration resistant. However, I believe at least some extras should have been provided with the factory tool kit. Finally got mine from Stoddards.

Try visiting a Porsche repair shop and asking to buy one.
