I was washing the car yesterday and I started to get annoyed at the "Carrera RS" decal on the ducktail. I differentiate that designation from the Carrera side decals, since the side decals are really just styling extras and have been used on many 911s. But the rear decal is an actual model designation. My car may finally have reached a performance level where it's not embarassed to wear the flares, wider rear rubber, oil cooler bumper and tail. But calling it a Carrera RS is just too much--really pretending to be something it's not. So I peeled off the RS.
Of course, now it looks dumb with just the offset "Carrera" on the back--that should probably come off too. Any suggestions as to what (if anything) I should put on the back? There's not too much "911E" left, so that's not right. Maybe the later script style "911" logo? Maybe just an "RS"? Maybe just leave it bare, except for the PORSCHE stripe?

i think it looks great as it is - with the offset "carrera". it doesnt need to be in the middle.

in MHO you should ditch the carrera decal on the ducktail. it would look nice with just the other decals.

I think, since you were doing a replica, the RS would be fine, and looks cool. But, with it off I think just the Carrera is fine as well.
If you could get another decal for that, I would remove the old Carrera and center the new one splitting the difference with the removed RS... That way it appears in the correct spot symetrically as the full Carrera RS and doesn't look out of place. That is what I intend to do on my 84 once I paint my tail. I still think the RS would be really cool too. Who cares if it's an original... It's your car... AND your paying good homage to a great car...

Good looking as is.
But you are really troubled be a moral or ethical issue - what deserves an "RS"? I think you should put the problem to the guys a Car Talk -- and to the ethicist guy that NPR interviews weekly. It'd be fun to hear them run with it. |

I would either center (r-l) the Carrera or delete it.
Great color. Same as mine. Paul

I think I would have left it in place. The 3.0 badge makes it clear to sticklers that it's not an actual RS.
However, just about any decal combination is going to look good on that car. It's easy to get carried away with this stuff. For the record, the teenagers who wear Lakers jerseys to school aren't actually members of the team, either. I don't think they're living too much of a lie.

I don't see anything wrong w/ it. As long as the cuff matches the collar so to speak. In all likely the performance of your car at least matches the original.
My own vanity

I am very against the false badging of cars, but thats just me.
It strikes me as automotive poseurism. |

My opinion is that the back looks too busy... 3.0, Carrera, Porsche, Friends don't let friends apex early, and antique historic vehicle is a lot of signage. My personal preference is a clean look. If I bought this car from you the first thing I'd do is peel off the Carrera and get a plain black license plate frame.

I'm usually not one to dictate what's "proper" in terms of modifications to a 911. Pretty much anything goes that's "tasteful" and purposeful, but IMHO if one puts RS badges on an early 911 it should be a pretty close match to one. There's even an argument that if it's not a true RS, why call it that? My car is closer to an S than a T. I'd be roundly criticized installing 911S emblems on a vehicle not even closely as rare as a real RS. Does the popularity of RS stickers on clone cars make it any more "correct"? Geesh, I'm getting to sound like a concours-type.

To make a clone of a vehicle and badge it accordingly, is IMO, the purest form of flattery. When I build my RSR and do the Martini paint scheme am I going to have a "poser" car? No... I think not. Again, it is simply a way to keep a vintage look alive in the current years. Most GOOD RS copies are much better cars than the original anyway, so who is to say what is pure? If you look at a lot of the early racing cars, they had ill fitting parts, basically quick and somewhat sloppy paint jobs etc... To make a "replica" is just that. Usually better. For instance in this thread the car has a 3.0 liter engine. Better than original??? Hmmm... So I say keep the badge and keep the RS look alive. BTW would anyone here call Jack a "poser" for having an RSR badge on his Bastard??? I think not. Then what is the prob with the RS...

It's bling and we all know it. I know what RS means but don't have to spell it out to everyone else who can read. Your car may well be better than the original but if you add the RS/RSR you are a poser IMO
