993 mirrors - Help

Anyone who has assembled some 993 manual mirrors, is there a trick? How did you guys get the spring compressed enough to assemble the mirrors to their mounts?

Is there a special tool? Is there a substitute? Does anyone have this special tool they would allow me to lease/borrow if shipping paid for both ways?

I'm ready to install and get the aftermarket off the car, but can't figure out if I'm just a wuss or if there is a trick.

I struggled with this recently. I created a little compression jig like the one shown in Excellence and while I got the srping to compress sufficiently, I could not get it to turn inside the mirror. I tried the bolt in the vice trick and could not force myself to exert enough pressure to get the job done. I kept thinking... This thing is gonna bust in my hands.

Finally I went to see my friend in the body shop. He had some nifty clamps used in body work which resemble vice grips with huge circular jaws. We we able to compress the spring with these inside the mirror housing and rotate them into position with no drama. This is the method I would recommend. I used the PET diagram to figure out where all the little pieces went and didn't have any left over when we were done.

Maybe its just me, but I think those springs are way over engineered for this application. I can't rotate my mirrors because they are too tight.

Thanks for the responses and I think the little jig will work. I just got frustrated outside tonight and couldn't come up with a solution with the kids begging for a ride.

I think they must have seperated a set of those cheap "Z28" valve springs that all those Chevy guys used for springs. Fact, I removed stock springs from engines that seemed softer than these mirror springs!
