Oxygen Sensor replacement - Can I go generic?
I want to replace my 02 sensor.
Pelican carries it for $122.25 on this site. It looks to be a direct replacement including the Porsche-type OEM plugs on the end. Smart and clean for your weekend mechanic. After some Internet searching, I've found "generic" 3-wire sensors (without the plugs - just bare wires with 12" of lead) for about $45. I'm on a budget, and I'd like to go with the "generic-type" sensor. Of course, I'd do a nice splice and connection to get an excellent contact... but what are the other downsides to a "generic" Bosch sensor? I'm under the impression the sensor is identical, but you are paying ~$80 for the plugs!

I bought a O2 sensor for a miata I once owned from an aftermarket parts house. The only difference I could tell was the connectors. You need to get under the car an cut the existing wires then soder on the new wires. Once it was done it work flawlessly.

My 84 has a generic one with the wires spliced to the old connector. Works fine for me.

The only downside to the "universal" O2 sensors is some of them have a different diameter than the Porsche version so the snap on heat shield doesn't fit.
