Mobil 1 and Octane booster additive
ok, I know this is somewhat like asking whether abortion is right or wrong, but for my specific car:
'84 911/150k miles - Normally aspirated. Would you continue to use Mobil 1? The previous owner used it, and that's what's in there now. I do get a drop or two on the garage floor after driving, but that's it. As far as I can tell, it doesn't burn it (no smoke), but I've only had the car a week, so I'm not sure of the consumption rate. Since I'll only be changing about once/year it's not a huge investment, but is it worth it? Also, the manual recommends 96 octane. Locally, I think you can find 93, but most premium is 91. Would you add octane booster? Right now I have 91/93 in there and am not hearing any pinging/etc. Thanks, Craig

Most boosters are crap. If your not hearing any pinging, I would say don't worry. But there is pinging that you don't hear as well. Can you even get 96 octane anymore? Ca. sucks when it comes to gas.
Keep using the mobile

It probably says 96 octane RON. Research Octane Number (RON) is used commonly other places in the world, but the US uses a MON+RON/2 method (the average of Motor Octane Number and RON). I'm not sure what 96 RON is, but it is probably 89 or so in the US...
Regular dino oil is fine. Mike

I think RON 96 would be 91-92 in the states. You are probably fine with the 91, or certainly with the 93, that you are now using.
BTW I am using Mobil 1 in my modded SC engine w/ 75000mi and no drips on the garage floor. Paul

Over-the-counter octane boosters are useless. They raise the octane in tenth of a point -- not full point -- increments. So, to get the octane you're looking for, you would need to add 10x as much of the product as you'd think you would from reading the label.
Mixing in race gas makes more sense, if you need to raise the octane. Toluene is also a viable path. But you don't need higher-octane gas for a stock 3.2.

I think some folks have had luck with the boost from Trick Industries. I believe 'Emission' uses it in his 930......just going from memory on a conversation we had at a gas station on one of the Big Bear runs.....

I have a case of Torco in my garage. You mix a 32 oz can of this stuff with gas in a 5 gal jug and shake like hell. I have run it my turbo saab and I'm able to sustain 23 lbs of boost for as long as I want. Before-only 19. This is without water being injected. This stuff works!
I have also run it in the blown viper and I can tell a difference when getting on the gas. Not like the saab though. Probably because driving a car that has 730 hp is an experience all in itself with or without gas additives. http://www.torcoracefuels.com/torcoenter.htm

I disagree on the oil. If you are only changing the oil once a year, then keep the synthetic. As I understand it, synthetic doesn't break down like dyno oil.

I like the synthetic because I change the oil only once a year (6000mi) topping up in between as needed, and since my engine is modified I can sometimes encounter 250 degree temps in summer traffic. The car is garaged 3 months in winter.
If it leaked, I might switch back to dino, depending on how badly. Paul Paul

I changed to Mobil 1 for the 1st time 2 months ago. My car now has a very small leak but it runs cooler than it did with Castrol GT. I think I am going to keep running Mobil 1.
The cheap octane boosters do not work. Some of the expensive ones do but I worry about what is in it. I had big block corvettes that had to have more octane. I would buy the blue flame race fuel and keep it in a 5 gallon container. I could put one gallon in a full tank of premium and not have any pinging. It ran at that time about $5.00 a gallon. |

TRICK Octane Booster does work - it raises octane a 2-3 full points (yes, crappy California 91 becomes 93-94). I've used it for years in my 930 to prevent predetonation. Most stock engines don't benefit from higher octane. Boosted/modified cars often do. I am a distributor now, through my company, Schnell Auto, Inc. PM me if you want more info (I can ship it UPS).
