Non-Porsche Engine Swapping
Is it wrong to put another brand engine in a Porsche?
I have seen many doing this as if it is common. I think it is very wrong. It is taking the heart and soul out of the car and putting in something cheaper. Some of these engines may flat out beat a stock 911 but in my opinion it cheapens the car and takes away value even for a track car. On the other hand I would like to take an old Porsche engine and modify for an old VW bug. I think the combination would be one powerful yet still practical car and it would keep the engine in the same family. Opinions.

it's just wrong. 911 engine in a bug is good on the other hand.

For crying out loud it's a machine; it has no soul! There is no morality involved in swapping in different parts only hobby attitudes and preferences. Porsche 911 engines are interesting but they're not mechanical perfection (damn good but not perfect). I would judge an engine swap by the results and the craftmanship of the work. I rather see a 911 with a V-8 or even a Franklin helicopter engine than junked.

sorry the bumper is off but this is why some do it. Yes I could have done a 3.2 or even a 3.6 for what this eventually cost. these are not cheep done right.

I love the way my 912 sounds with a dual cam subaru engine...I'm looking go 4 cammer later on..
I start it up for people, and they're like..." it doesn't sound any different. search for porscharu...somewhere there's a link to a movie file. sjd

It's just plain wrong! I would never do it!
I would rather enjoy driving on sundays with my freshly polished car, enjoying that sweet flat-six music knowing that spirit of of great Dr.Ing. Ferdi is behind my back yadda yadda...

Now you didn't limit your original title to 911's. With this being the case, I would definitely consider a swap in a pre S4 928. There are many more reliable faster, lighter, better engineered Al V8's today. Domestic and other that could do better. Heck, a Cayenne engine would be in the right direction. How about a dual turbo Audi? Would that be OK since they race together.

I don't like the idea of another engine in a 911 (excluding a newer swap i.e. a 3.6). However, owning a bug I always wanted to put a 914 engine in it. Knowing the size of my 911 engine though, my 2.7 is no-way gunna fit in my bug with out some serious alterations (read: slice the back off).

Not super hip on Subaru in a 911, but you'd have to admit if you could pull it off well, it could make a VW scoot!!!!
Does a V6 Cayenne engine count as a VW engine or since tuned by Porsche like a 912E or 924 does it then become a "Porsche" engine and be acceptible? Just a question of theory, because I'd rather have an Al Chevy than a Cayenne engine in there at that point. It would make it PCA legal though

I am the authority of this subject after almost getting a 1978 Cab (yes it was a targa before) with a v6- chevy truck engine in it. The car was a mess, transmission grinding and going to shet. The car just wasn’t right, now if it had been right? Who knows, but after driving a 83 SC Targa, I came to the conclusion you should not accept a substitute. There is no substitute for the 911 engine. But I have to admit some conversions seem interesting

If somebody else made a flat, 180-degree V6 (or V8) that was also air cooled, I'd consider it.

thinking out loud... what about a Subaru WRX Motor? I have heard they are fairly cheap used (less than 2K complete) and are relatively easy to get 300hp out of. No idea what they weigh though.
