ATE Super Blue and ATE Gold brake fluid

Other than the color, is there any difference between ATE Super Blue and ATE Gold?

TIA

No. Just the color so you can be sure you bled the whole system thru.

EDIT: I beleive the ATE gold is called ATE Super 200?

Has anyone noticed the price on this has gone through the roof? It used to be $12 at the local Olympic Parts store. Now it's $20. Has this happened everywhere?

The Ate fluid that is comparable to super blue is "Typ 200". It is identical in specification to super blue. Super blue does not meet some standards simply because of the color, but in practice they work exactly the same. the super blue will stain your reservoir, though. Pelican simply lists "ate gold" and the last time I ordered that I got Typ 200. Ate does, however, make other gold brake fluids, and Typ 200 is the best. Thus, the pelican catalog should probably say "Ate gold typ 200" or some such instead.

ate's current fluids (super blue not listed for some reason): current fluids

Richard, they are both still under $10 here on pelican, and I bought some locally a month and a half ago and the price was about the same as I was used to (12-15). I can't get it locally at basic auto parts stores (I've never been to an Olympic, they don't have them here).

One can save about half the price of ATE gold/Typ 200 and use Valvoline SynPower brake fluid. They are pretty much equivalent when it comes to dry boiling points.

ATE blue/gold = 536 F

Valvoline SynPower = 503 F

So unless you need those extra 30 degrees (and if you do, you should be looking for something other than higher temp. fluid to address your overheating issue), the Valvoline stuff is basically equivalent to the ATE stuff. And SynPower is readily available at most any auto store.

Dry boiling points are not really indicative of how well the fluid will perform in real condition.
In fact the liquid will start absorbing moisture as soon as you open the can. At this point you cannot talk about dry condition anymore. Super Blue is excellent as it has a very high wet boiling point when compared with much more expensive fluids.

it is recommendable to change the fluid often because of the fact that as time goes by it will become more and more diluted and the boiling point decrases.

I totally agree..... ATE is not the best.... but at that price it's difficult to beat.
All I care is wet boiling point and I havent found a better fluid for less than $80 per liter

As Shawn mentioned, the nice thing about Super Blue is that it is easy to tell when you've completely bled the system when switching from SB to Typ 200 between system bleeds. And because they are identical, it doesn't matter if you get some mixture.

I have read that SB will no longer be sold in the US because the color additive doesn't pass DOT (or something like that). If this happens and SB isn't available some time in the future, are there any other "good" brake fluids out there that are different colors?

I am currently using the Ford HD brake fluid because it was available locally and my M/C took a crap. I will let you guys know how it holds up. If I have any issues I will try the Motul stuff if our local cycle shop carries it.

The ATE Super Blue and ATE Super 200 (amber color) (aka Type 200)are the same except a dye is aded to the blue. In the US, DOT has mandated that brake fluid be the same amber color. Hence Blue is limited to what was on the shelves.

911teo, is correct the wet # is the more meaningful, as soon as the can is opened the dry # is no longer applicable.

I thought that this was why the super blue didn't have a DOT rating in the past, but are they now not allowing it to be sold, even for racing purposes? I guess we will have to figure out an appropriate dye to use in brake fluid and we can make our own blue (or whatever) out of any fluid we choose. Anybody have a clue?

Maybe the blue/gold switch is not that important, but I _do_ appreciate being able to tell exactly when I have gotten rid of my old stuff. I guess you could do this by volume, but the color is so easy.

Just in case anybody's curious about the applicable #'s

ATE Typ 200/SB wet bp = 392 F

SynPower wet bp = 343 F

Which is shown on Sherwood's page.

That Motul 600 sure does look like a good deal for $12! For all you racer nuts.

The GS610 is better - I think Pelican carries it at $39 or $29 a litre - for the same sort of results still - I think the Motul 600 is the best for the buck...

I think Pelican should start carrying it -

How about adding a few drops of blue or red food coloring.
