Properly Educating Oneself On CIS
Pelican currently offers three books addressing our fuel injection systems:
Bosch Fuel Injection & Engine Management by Charles Probst, How to Tune & Modify Bosch Fuel Injection by Ben Watson, and Solving Bosch Continuous Injection System (CIS) Problems by James Weber. There is quite a bit of knowledge here on the board when speaking of the CIS systems and I want to increase my understanding of this system. I have seen many references to the Probst manual but have not heard much about the other two. Which book(s) would be best to have in the library when dealing with a 1981 911SC - both in ease of understanding and use? ![]() ![]() ![]()

I used the Bosch Fuel Injection & Engine Management to learn about the CIS system. The book is not specific to Porsche but does provide all the theory of operation and troubleshooting techniques for the different CIS systems Bosch have produced. What I learned from the book made it easy for me to work and repair my fuel injection system.

Thanks for the input - I ordered both the How to Tune & Modify Bosch Fuel Injection by Ben Watson and Bosch Fuel Injection & Engine Management by Charles Probst today from our host. My CIS fuel pressure tester arrived today also!!!

To fireant911 and others,
What did you think of the books? Any comments by others? I am in the same position as fireant911 was a year ago. Thanks!!

I have the Probst & Watson books plus the FSM; all great resources. Gaining knowledge about the system turned it from voodoo to simple in avery short time.
Alot of help is to be found by the experience of others, web searching K-jet will net alot of useful info from other Porsche owners as well as drivers of other brands which use the system. I've gone so far as to "rebuild" my fuel distributor with help I found on the net. |

The Probst book is the best. The other two are a waste of money.

Think outside the (air)box: kill the CIS system entirely and put something decent on there....
Ok,OK if that's not an option... First, get down teh basic theory of operation -- Bosch used to make a thin yellow 8.5"x11" pamphlet that explained this well. Dunno if it still exists. Next, get a troubleshooting manual. No idea re the 3 items above.

you know what would be great would be a timeline for all of the components. Something to help visualize when things are in or out of the system. I might have to sit down and draw that out.

I have the yellow pamphlet that Randy mentioned, as well as the first two books on the above list.
The yellow pamphlet is every bit as informative and usefull as the book by Charles Probst. Buying that book was something I didn't really need to do. The second book by Ben Watson was pretty good and I'm glad I bought it, dunno about the third. I think I learned more about CIS on this board than from any book. |
