How do you cope?

I just looked through my receipts... ugh.

It appears that I will have 50k into my coupe (including purchase price) by the time it is set-up the way I want it.

This was all out of pocket this year.

For the money, I could have purchased a low mile 993, or 996 or a bad-ass 930, or a slew of other cars that should out perform it.

The worst part is the car might be worth 25-30k tops when I'm done.

How does one cope?

When I feel guilty over how much I spend on cars, I always think, well I could be spending it on something worse like heroin, gambling, smoking etc etc.

Cool

Two rules are used in this household.

1. Never add all of the hours and receipts for parts together.

2. Never violate rule #1.

Why can't you just use the standard response for those who don't know?? "Yeah...I bought it cheap, and have maybe....$10K into it...."

$50K this year...ouch!

And...thanks also for admitting it...'cuz now, when someone gives me crap for the money I have spent on it, I can say..."Look, I'm not that bad! I know this guy who spent....."

I usually say "How much was your payment this month? What will the total payout be when you're done? And, how much will the car be worth when you're done?"

Of course, I have very few freinds theses days!

(Point being that lots of folk spend $60K on a sport utility that sells for $50K before financeing, and will be woth $20K when the note is paid... Ugggg.

At least my car will hold it's value, apparently forever!

I think the big question should be what is it worth to you?

Other than that?? I lie.

My theory is to never sell it. That way I don't have to realize the loss and just in case don't add up the receipts.

If you've got 50 large to throw at a hobby in one year coping is not an issue. Appreciate your situation.

If that doesn't work post pix. It's good therapy.

The way i see it (and this is what I tell my wife) youre not realy spending money...your just changing the form of the asset from cash to car parts. There is an asset still there. It could be sold to regenerate cash. A pedicure on the other hand is money that is spent/gone....keep folowing me here...in addition, the asset at some point will begin to appreciate (its an antique). Family portraits dont appreciate. In my mnd the use of funds on the p-car, is an excercise in building family wealth. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it. Plus, hey, I'm a CPA, I get paid big bucks to tell people what to do with their money, I cant be wrong.
