How do you replace the A/C belt?
I am on a trip from Pennsylvania to Florida and the engine has started to vibrate when the A/C is on. I checked the belt and its looks like it is starting to fray. I think I need to replace
the belt but I cannot figure how to get the belt off. The mannual shows how to replace the fan belt but not the A/C belt. I see two possiblities. Either loosen the bolts around the compressor and push the compressor in the direction of the engine to create slack in the belt or remove the bolt which holds on the pulley on the compressor. Anybody know how exactly to replace the belt? don hopkins ________________________________ |

I'm not sure of the year of your car, but mine has two bolts at the front under the compressor and one at the back, 14mm if memory serves.
Loosen all, but do not remove unless really neccessary, the one at the back is a pig to get back. and slide comp to the left. Jeff

Don:
It would help to know what model year your car is for questions as these... ![]() For my 85, not only do you loosen the 4 hold-down bolts on the compressor, but way over on the right side is a lateral screw that adjusts tension. You need to back of considerably on that one too ( runs in a left/right orientation as you peer into the engine compartment... ---Wil

My 83 Sc with a Sanden compressor has 2 bolts on the front of the bracket and 1 on the right rear. It also has a tension adjustment nut on the left with a stud that points at the fan housing. To remove the belt, loosen the 3 backet plate bolts, back off the tension nut so the compressor slides to the left, remove the belt from the compressor pulley, then wiggle it off the crank pulley past the engine tin. Getting it past the crank pulley can be a pain so it helps to have a flashlight.

On my '73, I need to take the clutch pully unit of the compressor itself. With the engine of, turn the air con on to engage the clutch. Undo the 13 mm, 1/2 inch, bolt in the center of the clutch. Turn the air con of. Find a bolt that will fit the threads you will find when the center bolt is taken out. I don't remember the size but somethig like 3/8 UNC. Insert the bolt and turn it, the clutch unit will come off the taperd axel of the compressor.

My 911 is a 1981 SC. I am in Florida and boy is it humid. I hope I can fix the AC before starting the return trip to PA on Thursday. My 15 year old son is very grumpy about the lack of A/C. Thanks.
