Did my mechanic strike again??? Alternator questions and pic's

I have been having problems with my charging system in my race car for awhile now. I thought I would swap out the alternator since I already tried the voltage regulator.
I took my alternator out and something seemed funny. I'm not sure because I have never changed one before. My previous mechanic was a little crazy, so now I am weary of his work. He is the one who wired this alternator.
1. Big Red/White wire was on the "B+"
2. Little Red wire was on the "D"
3. Brown ground wire attached to case was wired to one of the outside bolts of the alt???? Is that right????

Can someone confirm this? Shouldn't the brown ground wire go on the "D"???
Thanks in advance.

I'm not familiar with your alternator, but my experience with 911 alternators are that the diameter of the hole on the connector on the end of each wire is made to just slip over a stud on the alternator of an equal sized diameter. Make sense? If nothing else, this will give you a bump.

If it'll help..you'll have to figure out what the wires in your car go to.

Warren is farting out more than you need to know right now, and he ain't even awake yet

Hmmm. This Alt came out of a 70T. It looks like I'm missing some wires. Anyone else have any ideas? I have no other wires coming out. It looks as if both the red wire and the brown ground wire go on the "D".

the D is D+/61, which is the exciter terminal. the wire that goes there comes from the dash light. it's usually blue, but that's not important. with the key on, touch that wire to ground and see if the dash light comes on. there is no other ground post on your alternator, other than the brown wire in the plug that goes to the brushes. the external brown ground wire normally connects to one of the engine case studs and attaches to one of the outer studs on the alternator so it has a better ground to the engine than provided by the alt housing sitting on the engine. corrosion often forms between the two surfaces, inhibiting a proper ground. so, it looks correct the way it is. some alts have a D- terminal, which would be ground, but not on yours. don't connect the brown wire to that D terminal.

Chad,
good luck, I just had ine out and should of really looked closely at the wires. I did not. I do know that frank told me to run an additional ground wire. I ran one from one of the bolts on the back to one of the bolts on the top of the case. He says it helps to prevent burning up tha ALT.

Good luck buddy.

I will talk to you next weekend. Me and the wife and kids are headed up to turlock for a week on a house boat. Talk to you when I get back.
