How about a transmission forum?

Covering rebuilding among other things.

I've brought up the same a couple of times to no avail. People thought it was a good idea, but nobody ran with the ball...

Transmission Forum - YES.

I think it should be titled “Porsche 911 Transmission, Clutch, Axle Forum.”

I also would like to see most of the non-technical stuff on the “Porsche 911 Technical Forum” put on OT or somewhere. This Forum goes thru 3-6 pages per day and too many worthwhile technical subjects are lost in the flow.

Best,
Grady

"I also would like to see most of the non-technical stuff on the “Porsche 911 Technical Forum” put on OT or somewhere."

Grady, this is a problem. The 911 Forum is a community as much as a tech forum. Wayne has tried and toyed, but it is what it is. If for some reason the "community" is forced elsewhere, elsewhere might end up being Rennlist. Some tolerance is beneficial.

AFA trannys go, Red Beard on this and the 914 BBS has an excellent disertation on the 901. A lot of that info is good for the 915 as well. Between his infor and Haynes, you can get all you need for tech stuff. Wayne has mentioned a book on the subject and I think all the info in one source would sell.

So, between the current available info and Wayne's proposed book, a new tranny forum would be less technical than you think and more like the "community." Lots of talk about what gears and what Wevo vs. whatever. There are 15 technical forums here now, plus 30 some others, almost 50 places to look.

I'm not against a tranny forum even though it adds another. But I don't know what you'd do to purify the 911 Forum and adding another for that purpose doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

Milt,
I understand the community issue. What concerns me in my short time on this Forum that it could die from its own success. I lurked for more than a year on this Forum before my first post. As diligent as I try to be, I can’t keep up. I frequently get PM or e-mail asking me to read a particular tread that I missed or just didn’t post on.

I can imagine how a new poster feels when he asks an important question, only to have his thread disappear (down three or more pages) within a few hours or less. Look at how often someone has to bump their thread back to the top – with no replies.

How can Pelican spread the flow to other Forums while still maintaining the “community?”

Best,
Grady

Well, here we are, guilty of what we speak, LOL! I don't know what the answer is and this is not the first time this has been up here for discussion. Wayne has weighed in on this on more than one occasion and sparked HEATED debate. Go back aways and take a look for yourself. Several pages a day is the norm. You know what? When I go to a forum that move slowly like the Early S Registry, I get bored. (This has nothing to do with the menbers, only the amount of posts).

In a vain attempt of keeping this ON topic, I support a tranny forum. Seems like it would be simple to add.

There won't be a trans rebuild forum until Wayne writes the book. Better get going Wayne!

I agree, there is so much B.S that it's almost not worth visiting any more. Only the most blatent stuff gets moved. IMO it's very sad

Actually, I've not seen too much "blatent" material here lately moved. What is "technical"...is of course the question. I'm not interested in seeing the "Engine Building" forum brought onto this board for example.

Ha! I typed my message simultaneously with you Wayne. I didn't know you actually had planned a trans rebuild book. That would be awesome! I suppose it woudl be a 915 rebuild book?

Cheers, George

Is a Fabcar shifter twice as good as a Wevo shifter?

Very true Grady- about worthwhile subjects moving too quicly off the front page. But putting some of the Porsche talk in the OT nuthouse would mean a lot of people who don't dare venture there (like me) would never see it.

I think a split such as the Early S board has, would be beneficial.
"General Info" which is Porsche talk, but is more community than technical in nature.
And "Technical Info" , which is self explanatory.
The 'off-topic' forum also exists for the non-Porsche nonsense.

my 2 cents

max

Talk about hijacked!!

Well, anyway, as long as we are debating this again, the split is the best idea I've seen yet. Wayne?

Milt and Wayne,

The main reason I chimed in support of a transmission forum was to help get some posts off the “Porsche 911 Technical Forum.” The other is to help Wayne with a transmission book. There is no better place to vet information than on these forums. The degree of accuracy and completeness of the books by Anderson, Dempsey, and Ludvigsen leave most others in the dust.

Yes, I like max’ idea of “General” and “Technical” Forums. I almost never go to OT.

The other issue is to keep educating members as where and how to post. I think that is best done by moving threads when first posted. Wayne, did you get my e-mail from a few months ago?

Best,
Grady
