Verify a Part (distributor)
Hi all,
I have a question regarding how to verify a particular part. I recently got a distributor. I was told that it is from a 2.7 RS engine that had MFI. It is a Bosch unit, and has the part number 0 231 184 004. Below the part number is the letters JFUD and the number 6, with an arrow that's pointing left. I have another distributor, which I believe came from a 2.7l, CIS engine that has the same numbers on it. Is there any way that I can verify that what I received is in fact an RS distributor (without having to have the curve on it checked)? Does anyone know whether the RS had a different distributor body than a CIS? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Bob (911s). |

Bob,
While the pn you gave was not used on the 'original' '73 RS engines, it was, nevertheless, used in later 911/83 ROW 2.7 Carrera MFI engines! The original RS 2.7 used distributor 0.231.169.011, which used 'mirror-image' points from the later points for the 184-series distributors No, the CIS 2.7 distributors didn't look any different than earlier MFI 2.4 distributors or the 911/83 distributor! Various numbers from 0.231.184.001 to 0.231.184.007 were used in 2.7 CIS engines after 1974, but NEVER the '004' version which had a much more agressive advance curve than was ever used on a CIS engine, as well as a 7300 rpm rev limiter rotor! Originally, the 1974 2.7 CIS engines used the same distributor as earlier MFI and CIS 2.4 911T engines ... 0.231.169.008 with a 6500 rpm rev limiter rotor! All of the later 184-series CIS distributors also used 6500 rpm rev limiter rotors. The following thread has pertinent advance and timing data, and an exploded parts diagram for the 2.4 -2.7 engines' distributors, including the RS 2.7: distributor lube...

verify a part (distributor)
Hey Warren. I mistakenly started another post, rather than reply to this one. Anyway, thanks for the info, and appreciate any insights you may have in using this '004' distributor on a 2.7 with webers and solex cams.
Thanks, Bob. |

Thanks warren! That's the information I needed (setting initial advance at 10 degrees BTDC @ 900rpm w/ vacuum disconnected). Thank goodness for the people like you that are on this BB.
Thanks again, Bob. |
